Lily of the pyrenees is a herbaceous flower crop, one of the plants of the family called Liliaceae and belonging to the genus Lilies. In Latin, the name of the presented species is as follows:
Lilium pyrenaicum … Natural habitat - mountains and meadows of southwestern Europe, countries such as France, Spain, Portugal. With the help of selection, several garden forms of the plant species in question were bred, the most famous are the Unicolor variety, which has a clean color without blotches, as well as the Aureum variety, which has a brighter color than the original species and is decorated with many dark spots on the perianth petals.
Characteristics of culture
The Pyrenean lily is represented by a perennial flowering plant about 150 centimeters high; in culture, sometimes there are undersized specimens not exceeding 80 centimeters in height. The plant has a single strong, pubescent whitish villi stem of a dark green color, bearing lanceolate, densely planted, different-sized, velvety foliage of a rich green hue.
The racemose inflorescences of the presented flower culture consist of 5 - 15 large drooping flowers, sessile on long pedicels. The perianth petals are oblong, strongly curved and bright yellow in color with dark red or purple blotches. In the center of the inflorescence is a stigma and a filamentous bundle of stamens with a red anther and orange-red pollen.
The considered plant species has a rather large egg-shaped or spherical bulb, completely covered with small, leathery, white or yellowish scaly plates; and an annual root system composed of many filamentous processes. The fruit is an oblong green box filled to the base with seeds of a dark brown or black shade.
Growing conditions
It is advisable to choose an elevated and sunny location, in conditions of high humidity and shading, the culture does not bloom and soon dies. If other corms have previously grown on the proposed site, then this area must be abandoned, because the lily bulbs can attack the parasites and pests of their predecessors.
The Pyrenean lily belongs to the group of frost-resistant plants, however, in order to avoid freezing of the bulbs, at the time of severe frosts, it is recommended to plant it in an area protected from cold winds and the harmful effects of low temperatures. The correct location will help to avoid freezing of the bulbs and early transplants.
The considered plant species prefers light, fertile, slightly moist soil with a neutral pH level. Heavy, clayey, swampy and saline soils with high acidity are not suitable for growing this crop, the plant will not take root and die.
Care
The main care of the Pyrenean lily consists in regular and moderate watering, timely fertilizing with mineral and organic fertilizers, periodic loosening and removal of weeds.
It is advisable to feed the plant at least 3 times per season, the first time it is necessary to fertilize at the beginning of the season, that is, in early spring; the second time just before flowering; the third - in the fall, a few weeks before the onset of cold weather.
Pyrenean lily is a rather moisture-loving plant, it is advisable to water it in the early morning or late evening, so that the soil and the plant have time to absorb a sufficient amount of moisture before the onset of heat. During the period of active flowering, the plant needs a larger amount of liquid; in the resting phase, the volume of liquid can be reduced.
