Abundantly flowering miscanthus (lat. Miscanthus floridulus) - a bushy cereal plant of the Miscanthus genus (Latin Miscanthus) of the Cereals family (Latin Poaceae). In addition to the external decorativeness used to decorate the landscape, all parts of the plant are suitable for the most varied everyday needs of the local population of the countries in which Miscanthus grows freely in the wild. In particular, the roots of Miscanthus are used by folk healers to treat ailments. The plant is native to the lands of Japan, Korea, as well as a number of islands in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean.
Description
Abundant flowering miscanthus is a perennial, herbaceous, bushy plant. The long-term guarantee of a herbaceous plant is a thick rhizome that grows both horizontally and vertically, often protruding from the soil. From the rhizome to the surface of the earth, erect, strong stems with numerous leaves are born. The usual plant height up to 2, 5 (two and a half) meters in particularly favorable conditions can reach 4 (four) meters. When grown in areas with cold winters (for example, in the UK), the aerial part dies off for the winter, but the next year, the abundant flowering Miscanthus very quickly increases its usual height.
The leaves of Miscanthus richly flowering are long and narrow, grooved. The length of the leaves reaches 90 (ninety) centimeters with the width of the leaf plate up to 3 (three) centimeters. The leaves bend beautifully with their sharp noses to the earth's surface, turning the bush into a kind of green fountain or fireworks. In autumn, foliage takes on purple hues, gradually turning brownish by winter. During the winter, the leaves fall to the ground, leaving only tough stems.
Winged inflorescences that appear towards the end of summer are formed by small grayish-brown flowers. The flowers of Miscanthus are hermaphrodite and pollinated by the wind. Like other species of the genus, flower panicles are equipped with silvery hairs, which gave rise to popular names - "Silver Lake Grass of the Pacific Ocean", "Chinese Silver Grass" and the like.
Usage
Abundant flowering miscanthus needs large spaces, and therefore it is used as an ornamental plant planted among trees, a tapeworm against the background of a green lawn or near a reservoir, to create hedges. Rhizomes with healing powers are used by folk healers. Paper is made from the stems of the plant, and young leaves are fed to domestic ruminants.
Picturesque inflorescences-panicles of Miscanthus profusely flowering are suitable for cutting, as well as for drawing up winter dry bouquets.
In the highlands of Papua New Guinea, Miscanthus grows profusely in the wild and its stems are actively used by the local population to create garden fences, to build the outer wall of traditional houses, and also as torches for lighting in the dark. For example, schoolchildren illuminate the long way to school, starting at 5 o'clock in the morning, with such torches, the length of which reaches one or two meters, and therefore they burn for a long time.
Growing conditions
Miscanthus is a richly flowering rather cold-resistant plant. It can easily endure strong winds; can grow in partial shade, but grows more successfully in full sun; prefers moist soils, very unpretentious to the composition of soils, but on fertile soils pleases with more spectacular and powerful bushes.
The drooping foliage is not cut out for the winter, as it continues to decorate the garden, and also turns into a natural protection for the root system. It is harvested in early spring to make room for new shoots.
