Common privet (lat. Ligustrum vulgare) - ornamental shrub; a representative of the genus Privet of the Olive family. In nature, shrubs can be found in forests with a predominance of oaks and elms, deciduous forests and hornbeam groves in Asia Minor, North Africa, Europe, as well as in Moldova, Ukraine and the Caucasus.
Characteristics of culture
Common privet is ranked among unpretentious crops. It is a densely branched deciduous shrub up to 5 cm high. The leaves are dark green, simple, leathery, glabrous, lanceolate, spear-shaped or oblong-ovate, pointed. The foliage is lighter on the underside than on the outside. The flowers are white, small, fragrant, collected in dense paniculate inflorescences. Fruits are spherical, shiny, black in color, preserved on the branches until January. The fruits are not used for food, since they are poisonous.
Common privet blooms in early summer for 20-30 days. In culture, common privet is rare, although it has high decorative properties. Moreover, plants are able to grow in shady areas with any soil. Common privet reveals all its decorative properties on sunny grounds, with this arrangement it blooms better and develops more actively, forming beautiful compact bushes. Common privet lends itself to shearing, shrubs can be given any desired shape.
In terms of showiness, privet is in no way inferior to many ornamental shrubs and trees. The species boasts resistance to pests and diseases. At a young age, privet grows very quickly, is also distinguished by drought resistance and winter hardiness, and is able to withstand frosts down to -30C, however, short-term.
Common privet propagates by seeds and vegetatively (cuttings, layering and root suckers). Plants are often used as a rootstock for olives, lilacs and some types of privet. It is recommended to cultivate the crop in regions with a temperate climate; in areas with cold winters, shrubs need shelter. Shrubs fit perfectly into any stylistic direction, they make spectacular hedges, interesting trimmed figures and loose groups.
Subtleties of planting and care
Planting seedlings of common privet, its forms and varieties, is preferable to carry out in the spring. If you plan to create a hedge, then before planting a rope is pulled, which will allow the seedlings to be planted in a straight line. You can dig both individual planting holes and a trench. In either case, the depth should be at least 60-70 cm. The seedlings are placed from each other at a distance of 50 cm. Immediately after planting, abundant watering is carried out, directing the flow so that the water falls under the root. The soil should be saturated to a depth of 50-60 cm. You can also apply mulch, it will keep the moisture necessary for the young plant.
Varieties
Of the common varieties, it should be noted:
* Aureo-variegatum - the variety is represented by compact shrubs up to 100 cm high, characterized by golden-variegated foliage. It cannot boast of winter hardiness and rapid growth. Does not come into bloom. Propagated by cuttings, when treated with growth stimulants, up to 100% of cuttings rooted.
* Glaucum Albo-marginatum - the cultivar is characterized by beautiful ornamental shrubs with bluish-green foliage with white or dove-gray edging. An excellent option for ornamental gardening, looks great in single and group plantings. A promising variety.
* Aureum - the variety is represented by semi-evergreen shrubs up to 100 cm high with golden foliage. As well as the variety Aureo-variegatum, it does not bloom. The growth rate is slow. The foliage remains on the branches in warm winters. The variety is not winter-hardy, propagates by summer cuttings; when treated with growth stimulants, up to 98% of cuttings take root. It is promising for the southern regions of Russia; when cultivated in central Russia, it needs shelter.
* Vicari - characterized by semi-evergreen shrubs no higher than 100 cm with a beautiful and dense crown and golden-yellow, broad-oval foliage, which in autumn acquires bronze-violet hues. Differs in abundant flowering. The flowers are small, fragrant, white, bloom in July.
