Colchicum bright (lat. Colchicum laetum) - a perennial representative of the genus Colchicum, belonging to the large Colicaceae family. Another name is Colchicum jolly. A rather rare species, it is endemic to the steppes of the North Caucasus, also found in the Volga region and on the Don. It is listed in the Red Book of Dagestan and Ossetia-Alania, as well as Rostov, Volgograd and other regions of Russia. In culture, it is cultivated infrequently, although it is easily propagated by the seed method, it is famous for its massive shoots.
Characteristics of culture
Colchicum bright, or cheerful, is represented by perennial herbaceous plants equipped with an ovoid large bulb, which reaches 3-4 cm in diameter. A distinctive feature of the bulb is the coating formed by leathery blackish-brown sheaths, which, in turn, stretch into a thin tube.
The foliage of the culture in question is wide, pointed, has a pale green color. As a rule, no more than 4 leaves are formed. The flowers are large, formed in an amount of 1-3 pieces, they can be purple or light purple in color. Tepals are elongated, ellipsoidal or lanceolate, and do not exceed 4 cm in length.
The fruit of the bright columbus is represented by an egg-shaped capsule with a short stalk. Fruiting occurs before flowering. Whereas the flowers do not open until the end of August, sometimes in the first decade of September. The foliage dies off before flowering, while daughter bulbs are formed, usually in the amount of two or more.
Seed propagation
In frequent cases, crocus crops are propagated vegetatively, that is, by dividing the bulb. But this does not apply to the bright crocus, it is preferable to propagate it by seeds, since they give massive shoots. The only thing: plants grown by sowing seeds bloom only in the fifth or even sixth year. It is by this time that the bulb is gaining strength.
Sowing seeds should be carried out in moist, nutritious and loose soil immediately after harvest, that is, at the beginning of summer. The seeds do not need preliminary preparation, but experienced gardeners and flower growers advise soaking the seeds in warm water. If the seeds are not sown immediately after harvest, they will need cold stratification for 6 months. It, in turn, can be carried out by placing the seeds in the refrigerator.
When sown in summer, seedlings will appear only the next year in spring, less often they appear closer to the middle of summer, but they always sprout amicably and in large numbers. It is important to provide young plants with high-quality care, which, in addition to standard watering and weeding, includes timely thinning. For the winter, young crocus should be covered with a thick layer of foliage, otherwise they will freeze.
It should be noted that the bright crocus loves open sunny areas, they can also be sown in a semi-shady area with diffused light. If you sow a crop in an area with dense shade, most likely the plants will die from the invasion of slugs. It is also important to choose areas with light alkaline soil, a heavy one will negatively affect the health of croplands. The optimal distance between plants is 15-20 cm, too often they should not be planted.
Among the variety of flower cultures, peonies coexist well with the bright crocus, which, even in summer, decorate the garden with rich and dense foliage, which means that temporarily (before flowering) they cover the withered foliage of the culture in question, because, as already mentioned, flowers form after dying off leaves.
