Washingtonia thread is part of a family called Arecaceae. The states of Florida and California are considered the homeland of this plant. Actually, the plant owes its name to the first president of America. Sometimes there is also such a name for Washington as a priest's skirt. This is due to the fact that in natural conditions the leaves of the plant do not fall to the ground, but sink, which creates the impression of a kind of robe.

Washingtonia filamentary is a perennial palm tree with a smooth and straight trunk that tapers towards the top. If you remove old leaves, then transverse scars appear on the trunk. In nature, this plant reaches a very large size, but if it is grown at home, the size of the plant is more moderate. The leaves of the palm tree appear from the very top, the leaf blades are quite large, gray-green in color, almost half they are dissected into xiphoid segments. Actually, in room conditions, washingtonia filamentous does not bloom, but in nature it happens after ten to seventeen years.

Such a palm tree is perfect for rooms in which it is cool, and there is also good lighting. In indoor conditions, this palm tree will not grow higher than two meters, and the plant will grow for many years, so you should take care in advance to provide Washington with quite spacious rooms.

Care and cultivation of washingtonia filamentous

Washingtonia are considered very light-loving plants, therefore it is recommended to place this plant on a south window. However, on particularly hot days, you should provide reliable protection against intense solar radiation. In a warm period, the plant should be placed in the fresh air until the beginning of autumn. In especially hot weather, it is recommended to spray the palm, so you can sometimes leave the plant in the rain. It is also very important to constantly ventilate the room where the pot with the palm tree is located. In winter, the plant should be protected from cold air currents.

For growing palm trees in the summer, the optimal temperature is twenty to twenty-five degrees. In winter, the minimum temperature regime will be eight degrees, and the maximum is thirteen degrees. In natural conditions, palm trees can tolerate cold snaps well, but when grown at home, a palm tree will not cope with this.

In autumn and winter, the palm tree should be kept in a cool place, and watering should be provided very rarely. At this time, intense lighting is not required, so the palm tree can simply be placed in a spacious room. If there is insufficient air humidity in winter, the palm tree may dry out, so you should ensure that the plant is sprayed daily. Sometimes you can put a tray in which there will always be water, and periodically this water should be renewed.

It is very important to ensure that the plant is properly watered during the summer. However, stagnation of moisture can be detrimental to the washingtonia filamentous. It is impossible to water damp soil, you should wait until the soil is almost completely dry.

As for the cold season, watering should be provided twice a month. In this case, the earthen lump should not completely dry out. However, a certain moisture content must always be present in the substrate. In winter, the palm tree should be watered in the morning, and in summer it is better to do it in the evening.

As for the soil, you will need a loose, waterproof and nutritious soil. A mixture of clay-sod, humus-leaf soil and manure with river sand, thoroughly washed beforehand, will become the ideal soil for washingtonia. There should be a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot. The pot should be deep, but not very wide.
