New Belgian aster (lat. Aster novi-belgii) - perennial flower culture; a representative of the genus Astra of the family Astrovye, or Compositae. North America is considered the birthplace of culture. Under natural conditions, Novobelgian aster grows in the taiga, in open areas, in mixed forests, etc. This type of aster was introduced into the culture back in 1686. Currently, the species has hundreds of varieties and hybrids that boast abundant flowering, winter hardiness and high decorative properties.
Characteristics of culture
Novobelgian aster is represented by perennial herbaceous plants that form sprawling or pyramidal bushes in the process of growth, bearing short or long strongly branched naked or pubescent stems, strewn with another sessile green lanceolate foliage. The inflorescences-baskets of the Novobelgian aster are small, numerous, consist of disc (tubular) yellow flowers and ligulate flowers of blue, pale pink, lilac, snow-white and other colors, which depends on the varietal affiliation.
Reed flowers are arranged both single-row and multi-row. Some varieties have inflorescences, the reed flowers of which almost completely overlap the disc flowers, making them look semi-double or double. Such varieties are highly decorative and are actively used for landscaping personal backyard plots, summer cottages and city parks. Sometimes the Novobelgian aster is called santbrinka, the plant received this name during the flowering period, most varieties bloom in early September and pleases with their unprecedented beauty until the onset of frost.
New Belgian aster is used not only in decorative gardening, it is an excellent material for creating lush bouquets. Surprisingly, with regular replacement of the water in the container, aster can stand up to two weeks. It should be noted that the Novobelgian aster is perfectly combined with other representatives of the Compositae family. They can also be planted on lawns and along ornamental shrubs with green or silvery foliage. The type of aster in question is also suitable for creating automalii (gardens of autumn flowers), which are very popular among gardeners.
Popular varieties
Astra Novobelgiskaya is famous for its variety of varieties. The only drawback is that most of them are not resistant to diseases. Like the New England aster, the species in question and its varieties are demanding on growing conditions, they prefer sunny and well-moisturized areas with nutritious soil.
Among the most common varieties among gardeners and florists, it should be noted:
* Amethyst (Amethyst) is an extremely beautiful variety that forms rather large bushes, reaching a height of 1 m, and bearing semi-double inflorescences-baskets with lilac marginal flowers.
