Arctotis hybrid (lat. Arctotis hybridus) - flowering culture; a representative of the genus Arktotis of the Asteraceae family. Does not occur in nature. Obtained by selection and hybridization of common species. Quite a popular type, it is actively used by gardeners and flower growers to decorate garden and summer cottages.
Characteristics of culture
Arctotis hybrid is represented by many varietal groups and hybrids, grown mainly as annuals. All of them are the owners of fleshy whitish or silvery densely pubescent leaves and strongly branched stems. There are varieties with foliage, green on the outside, and silvery on the back. Inflorescences-baskets, rather large, reach a diameter of 8-10 (sometimes 12-13 cm), can be semi-double.
Inflorescences consist of two types of flowers - reed (or marginal) of the most varied colors (for example, red, white, purple, lilac, deep orange, yellow, yellow-orange or purple) and small tubular (purple, purple, violet-brown and dark purple in color). The varieties and hybrids of the species under consideration bloom profusely and for a long time, with the seedling method, the plants bloom already in the third decade of June - the first decade of July. As a rule, flowering lasts until September (in regions with a warm climate - until October).
All arctotis, including the hybrid one, have one unusual feature. Their flowers delight with their beauty only in sunny weather, when it is cloudy outside and with the onset of night they close. By the way, the inflorescences-baskets in the hybrid arctotis have some similarities with gerberas, especially varieties with red reed (marginal) flowers. Like other representatives of the genus, arctotis hybrid is drought-resistant, relatively cold-resistant and resistant to pests and diseases, of course, with good care and optimal climatic conditions.
Growing features
Arctotis hybrid is classified as light and heat-loving crops, active development and abundant flowering can be captured only in intensely lit areas. In the shade, plants will not show their true beauty, in addition, in such areas, they can die. Arctotis hybrid makes special demands on soils. They should be light, neutral, moisturized, and contain lime. On heavy clay, damp, acidic and poor soils, plants feel defective.
Negatively, the culture refers to soils containing fresh manure. In general, they do not need organic fertilizing; it is enough to apply complex fertilizer a couple of times per season. The first feeding is carried out in the spring when planting, the second - during flowering. The second feeding will stimulate the formation of new inflorescences. By the way, this is not the only way to stimulate; removing faded baskets also contributes to this process. In addition, removing them will prolong the decorative properties, flower beds with arctotis will look well-groomed and incredibly lush.
Hybrid arctotis, like all annuals, is propagated by seed. In the southern regions, seeds are sown directly into open ground in the first decade of May. Sowing is carried out in nests, 3-5 seeds per nest. The distance between the nests should be at least 30 cm. With this approach, arctotis bloom for 70-75 days. In central Russia, plants are grown through seedlings. In this case, sowing is carried out in peat pots (transplanting is fatal for arctotis) in the third decade of March - the first decade of April. Seedlings appear in 1-1, 5 weeks. At first, slow growth is observed, later it intensifies.
When the seedlings reach a height of 10-11 cm, pinching is required, it is required to ensure tillering. In the second or third decade of May, seedlings are planted in open ground, having previously been hardened. The distance between low-growing arctotis should be 25-30 cm, between tall and spreading ones - at least 40 cm. If sowing was carried out in ordinary pots, the transplant is carried out together with a lump of earth, its violation threatens the death of plants. The correct transplant is the key to success. Crop care consists of nothing unremarkable procedures, namely watering, weeding and loosening. Tall varieties require support.
