Alyssum sea (lat. Alyssum maritimum) - the most popular representative of the genus Alyssum, belonging to the Cabbage family, or Cruciferous. In nature, this species grows in Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Morocco, Israel, Cyprus, Malta and the Balearic Islands. Characteristics of culture
Alyssum marine is represented by annual herbaceous plants, not exceeding 30 cm in height, and forming rather compact bushes bearing many branches, literally strewn with small, linear, lanceolate, covered with short hairs of grayish-green foliage. The flowers of the species under consideration are small, regular in shape, and may have a white or light purple color. Flowers, by the way, are collected in dense racemose inflorescences.
A distinctive feature of the flowers of the sea alyssum is the presence of an incredibly sweet, delicate and very pleasant honey aroma, which attracts the attention of others, and simply makes you stop at the flower garden and breathe in the air saturated with sweetness. The flowering of the culture under consideration is observed throughout the summer, starting from the second - third decade of May. However, the timing may vary depending on climatic conditions and care.
So, in dry weather, plants stop blooming, especially quickly in the absence of proper watering. And he, by the way, plays a leading role in leaving. Without moisture, the plants will not show their true beauty and will not fill the garden with a breathtaking scent. Fruiting in alyssum marine is active, the fruit is an oval-shaped pod with a narrowed top, containing brown or yellow seeds.
Popular forms and varieties
As already mentioned, sea alyssum is a fairly popular species. Breeders also pay attention to it. And today in the garden market you can find a lot of forms and varieties. Among them, the var form has won special attention. compactum, it is characterized by dwarf plants topped with small white flowers, collected in lush brushes. The var form has received equal attention. benthamii, it is represented by low plants with white fragrant flowers.
Another form that is often found in Russian gardens is var. variegatum, she is motley. In the process of growth, it forms dwarf plants with unusually colored foliage, the border of which has a white-yellow tint. The flowers of the form under consideration are purple or white, always small, collected in dense inflorescences. Not inferior to the specified form - var. procumbens. Its peculiarity lies in compact and very low bushes, over which short clusters of numerous white or purple-violet inflorescences flaunt.
Of the varieties, New Apricot should be noted. It is represented by low plants with snow-white flowers, the corolla of which has a light apricot shade. This is the peculiarity of the variety. Also popular is a new variety called Easter Deep Rose. It is characterized by dwarf plants with rich pink flowers, which give the bushes a certain romance and attraction.
And in Russian gardens, the Tiny Tim variety is actively used. It is suitable for the decoration of borders, the outskirts of garden paths and rocky gardens, because it has a short stature. It is hard to believe, but in the process of growth the bushes do not exceed 8-10 cm. And its peculiarity is in snow-white flowers, which literally form a carpet, under which both leaves and creeping shoots are hidden.
