There are many advantages to container gardening, but it also has its own nuances and difficulties that you should learn about before preparing containers for planting. Here are some useful tips
Container gardening is becoming more and more popular. Plants in containers are aesthetic, mobile and easy to care for. At first glance, growing them is not so difficult, but before starting a container garden, it is useful to get acquainted with a few simple rules and important steps:
1. Correct positioning of containers in relation to the sun
It is possible to grow a gorgeous container garden even without enough sunlight. You can also grow a beautiful garden on an area bathed in sunlight throughout the day.
And yet, in order to grow plants in containers, it is necessary to first estimate how much sunlight they will receive. Do not look at the problem from an astronomical point of view - this is not correct. Try not to overestimate the amount of sunlight your plants receive.
First, calculate how many hours your garden will be exposed to direct sunlight during the time of the year when you start planting, as the sun period will be different during the winter and summer seasons. The amount of sunlight received depends on the choice of plants planted in containers.
2. Choosing a suitable container
Containers of any size can be used as a container. But most plants prefer free containers with a lot of soil, rich in nutrients and essential trace elements, and sufficiently moist.
In small containers, the soil dries out quickly, so they are more suitable for planting plants that do not need a lot of moisture. In addition, plants in small pots are more likely to get sick, suffer from pests. When choosing a container, check that it has enough drainage holes of the required size. If not enough, make your own holes in the bottom of the container.
3. Acquisition of useful soil
To plant plants in containers, you need to buy special soil, and in no case use the land from the site, so as not to be disappointed later. In gardening stores, you can buy potting soil made specifically for containers. But it is advisable to use organic soil, or soil without organic fertilizers, which you will then need to fertilize yourself.
4. The right choice of plants
After determining the amount of sunlight that will be provided to the plants, purchasing a suitable container and soil, you can safely start choosing plants for planting. Initially, plants are selected that grow and bloom well in the conditions available in the garden, including temperature, sunlight, watering conditions.
Many plants like to grow in the sun, others prefer shade, so you can make compositions of them by planting different plants at the same time in one container, the main thing is that they require approximately the same conditions regarding the amount of water and sunlight.
5. Planting plants in containers
After preparing everything that is necessary for building a garden in a container, the most important stage begins - planting plants. First, fertilize the soil if it needs it, and then cover the bottom of the container with a paper towel to keep the soil breathing.
The amount of soil in the pot should be such that it is 6 cm below the edges of the container. Fertilizers should be used such that do not burn the root system of the plants. You can use an organic, versatile, granular fertilizer and distribute it evenly throughout the soil.
The soil should be loose, it is good to let air and water pass through so that the plant roots are comfortable in it. For plants, holes are dug, quite deep. They are carefully buried, preferably so that no air pockets arise. After the first watering, you can add some soil.
6. Providing plants with proper watering
Water the plants in a timely manner to ensure sufficient soil moisture, while not overdoing it. In sunny or windy weather, the soil in containers dries out faster, and in cloudy weather it dries more slowly. This means that in the summer you need to water the plants more often, not forgetting to periodically loosen the soil.
