A rare amateur gardener does not dream of a personal vineyard. In the meantime, your own plantation is in the project, you can master the techniques of caring for grapes on several bushes. And a very crucial period in this matter begins in June

We remove barren and weak shoots

The time of intensive development of grapes begins just in the first summer month. A lot of new shoots grow at the bush these days. Excessive thickening of grapes should not be allowed. Therefore, you should get rid of unnecessary and non-fruiting shoots in time. First of all, they break out the shoots that grow from the underground part of the bush. Also, shoots are removed from the fruit vine when the young growth reaches 10-12 cm in size.

But how can you determine which new shoot will be fruitless? The tendrils of the grapes will help to figure this out. They are the first to signal that this shoot will not bear fruit, because the inflorescences do not form above the antennae.

It is also useful to get rid of completely weak shoots on those bushes, the variety of which is characterized by low fertility, but large bunches of grapes. This agricultural practice will improve the quality of the crop.

When to start pinning

The stepchildren, which form in the leaf axils in summer, are also removed when they grow about 10-20 cm long and already have at least 5 leaves. Passynching is performed between 1-4 leaves from the base. Some grape varieties with a high ability to form new stepsons will have to repeat this procedure several times in a row.

The tops above the inflorescences should be shortened

Strong fruiting shoots in the midst of flowering are shortened tops. This technique has a beneficial effect on the size and quality of the crop. The pinching is performed so that 5-6 leaves remain above the upper inflorescence.

On weak shoots and those intended for future layering, pinching is not carried out.

How to help pollination?

Grapes need to be helped to pollinate. During mass flowering, do not be lazy to set aside a few minutes in the morning or evening in order to speed up the process of transferring pollen from flower to flower. To do this, you need to lightly shake the wire of the trellis, along which the grapes grow and weave.

For the same purpose, you can arm yourself with an empty spray bottle or other sprayer and spray the inflorescences from them with a strong stream of air. This will help the pollen on the stigmas of the pistils to move to other bushes.

Garter grapes

Growing shoots need reliable support, otherwise they break easily and become vulnerable to various diseases, in particular fungal ones. A wide variety of materials are suitable for a garter. Cotton and polyethylene cords, thick fishing line, twine, polymer-coated electric wire, and fabric cut into ribbons are successfully used. Even willow twigs can be adapted for this business. Such devices can last more than one season.

A competent garter is performed with an eight. First of all, the cord is wrapped around the stretched wire of the trellis, and then the vine is fixed. It is very important that no constrictions form on the plant during the garter, otherwise it will interfere with sap flow.

Often grapes are grown near buildings, arranging trellises near walls and fences. At the same time, we must not forget that the shoots must be provided with good ventilation. A good solution would be to plant grape bushes near the gazebo, which will become his support, or arrange a trellis with a visor. The visor is made low at an obtuse angle. In this case, ripening brushes will be provided with good lighting. In addition, it is convenient to harvest with such a design when the brushes hang freely, and not tangled in the vine and mustache.
