At any summer cottage, upon close examination, you can see whole myriads of a wide variety of insects - they actively move from one plant to another, contact each other, and sometimes enjoy the harvest with great pleasure. Just do not rush to get rid of all insects at once - some of them can bring great benefits to summer residents and even help to overcome other pests! Who does not deserve shameful exile?
Ground beetles
Seeing ground beetles in the garden, do not be afraid and panic - a single average ground beetle can devour five medium-sized caterpillars or about a hundred pest larvae per day! At the same time, they feed not only on the larvae, pupae and eggs of various pests - ground beetles are not averse to feasting on adults, and even small slugs! They will help for more than one season - the life span of ground beetles is from three to five years. True, not all ground beetles can bring benefits - bread beetles, which are relatively small in size (up to one and a half centimeters), are themselves considered pests, so only large insects should be welcomed! So, when clearing the site in the fall, try not to damage the houses of these useful helpers - most often they hibernate under the bark or in heaps of humus, peat, sawdust or moss.
ladybugs
These miniature beauties can be of great benefit to any garden or vegetable garden: both adults and even their larvae very actively destroy copperheads, scale insects and aphids. An adult ladybug easily absorbs up to several dozen aphids a day, but their babies are even more voracious - they are able to eat exactly ten times more!
Ideally, it will not hurt even to create special conditions for attracting ladybirds to the site - for this, it is necessary to provide beneficial insects with their own housing: hollow stalks placed in secluded corners and sprinkled with sawdust or peat, as well as all kinds of decorative shelters, can act as "houses".
Lacewing
Unfortunately, adult lacewings will not help save the site from invasions of harmful insects, but their larvae are excellent helpers in this difficult, but very important matter. Each larva is capable of destroying up to one and a half hundred medium-sized ticks, worms or aphids a day! And, what is especially gratifying - during the summer, lacewings breed as many as two generations of offspring, each of which stays in search of food for at least three weeks. At the same time, the larvae of lacewings are very cunning creatures: they hide from the ants that destroy them by disguising themselves as aphids, that is, their survival rate is quite high!
Wasps
This is perhaps one of the most dangerous garden predators. Despite the fact that adult wasps feed mainly on juices of various fruits and sweet flower nectar, their larvae need protein food, respectively, parents have to regularly go hunting for a wide variety of harmful insects. Some species of wasps successfully cope even with the ill-fated bears (for example, the burrowing wasp Larra), while all wasps, without exception, perfectly destroy bedbugs, crustaceans, flies, aphids, leafworms and mosquitoes!
Ovate riders, or trichograms
Just like wasps, adult trichograms prefer to feed on nectar, but their larvae actively parasitize on the eggs of various insect pests! These crumbs are able to quickly leave parasites such as gooseberry sawfly, winter moth, meadow moth, codling moth and white cabbage moth without offspring. And even if there are no trichograms on the site, you can always buy them! True, for this you will have to go to a special laboratory - it is very problematic to find these assistants in ordinary garden stores. Even if you release only one trichogramma on your site, it will give such a number of offspring that it will easily destroy more than one thousand eggs of gluttonous garden parasites!
And one more very important nuance - do not forget that any chemical treatments against pests can destroy not only the pests themselves, but also beneficial insects, therefore, it is best to resort to them only in the most extreme cases!
