Alpine slide is a landscape design object, which is a corner of nature that imitates a mountain landscape.

The alpine slide, or, as it is also called, the rock garden, was known thousands of years ago, its history originates in the countries of the East. Ideas for arranging such compositions are given by nature itself. For the device of a classic rock garden, mountain plants, hills, stones are used, which should imitate the landscape of the Alps. In our time, the rock garden has gained immense popularity and is an integral part of a modern suburban area, therefore the organizers of such compositions have long departed from the canons of the classic alpine slide. For the device of the rock garden, they began to use those plants that are suitable for a specific area, get along about a specific climate and just like the organizers of the composition. To create an alpine slide, they began to use stones and various natural materials, sometimes they add elements with water - they arrange small streams and reservoirs. Small architectural forms can also be added to the composition.

It is not difficult to create an alpine slide on a site with your own hands, because a rock garden is a corner of wildlife that we can see every day. To inspire and strengthen the idea, first of all, you need to look around you, walk through the forest, meadow, if you are lucky enough to walk in the mountains and nature itself will suggest an ideal plan for creating an alpine slide.

The basis for creating a rock garden is the relief of the site on which it will be located. If the relief is mountainous, then a small hill can be the starting point for creating an alpine slide. If the site is on a plain, then stones will come to the aid of the creation - these can be either specially purchased stones or found natural boulders overgrown with moss.

Stages of creating an alpine slide

To create an alpine slide on a personal plot, first of all, you need to find an ideal place for a rock garden, the picturesque relief is not enough for this. The place for the alpine slide should be clearly visible, should receive a sufficient amount of sunlight and moisture, since the composition is based on plants. The best place for a slide would be the southern part, which is sufficiently well lit; it is better to avoid shady parts of the garden, since the vegetation in the composition will be sparse and stunted.

In order for the soil on the alpine slide to not begin to sag over time, you should take care of a good drainage system. To do this, you need to dig a small hole in the size of the future composition. For drainage, broken brick, crushed stone or gravel is suitable, which must be laid on densely rammed earth, with a layer of about 10 cm. Then the drainage should be covered with moistened sand and soil cleared of debris and roots. The layer of earth should be at least 20 cm, everything is well tamped, if necessary, water with water. Next comes a layer of stones, which will not only serve as a base, but will also help create a hill. Flat stones are placed directly on the ground; round stones should be slightly sunk into the ground for stability.

The next stage is planting. Moss can be planted between the stones, any creeping plants, and the gaps between stones that are not planted with plants can be covered with small stones, wood chips or sawdust. A find for an alpine slide will also be dwarf trees, most often conifers are chosen - dwarf pine, juniper, thuja. It must be remembered that trees should be pruned periodically, since they are not the main element of the slide and should not be knocked out of the overall composition. Also, shrub plants will harmoniously fit into the overall picture of an alpine slide (shrub St. John's wort, dwarf barberry and others). For the total mass of the rock garden, perennial flowering plants are chosen. They should be unpretentious and harmoniously matched in color. You can also plant flowers that are contrasting in color and shape, then it is advisable to combine the composition by planting plants of gray, ash and white flowers in order to organize and generalize the alpine slide. Also, do not forget about antagonistic plants that crowd out neighbors. Perennial plants should not be planted close to each other, as they grow rapidly, which can interfere with proper caring for them.

On a note

If you want your alpine slide to delight you with a variety every year, then you can, taking perennial plants as a basis, plant, while focusing on them, annual flowers. Each year, you can plant different varieties of plants and change the look of the flower garden.

An alpine slide should become the pride of your site, so do not hide such a piece of landscape art in the far corner of the garden. These general tips will help you find a starting point for your dream garden plan idea.
