If for some reason you did not have time to re-sow the lettuce in June, this is not a reason to abandon them in July - it is not too late to do this in order to provide yourself with vitamin greens for a longer period. For the most part, leafy, like petiole, crops have a short growing season, and several crops in a row can be harvested per season. So now is the time to get the lettuce seeds out of storage again
Preparatory measures to ensure conditions for re-sowing
The predecessors of lettuce can be any crops for which organic soil fertilization was applied. To carry out repeated sowing of lettuce after harvesting other vegetables from the early harvest beds, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the area from plant residues. All healthy parts of tops and roots are sent to compost for processing, and rotting leaves are sent to garbage. The area should also be inspected for signs of white or gray rot.
The soil must be additionally dug up and filled with fertilizers. For this, organic and mineral dressings are used. The following are used:
• compost or humus - about 3 kg per 1 square meter;
• nitrophoska - about 30 g per 1 sq. M.
Then the surface of the soil is leveled and sowing furrows are arranged for sowing seeds. For summer sowing, the seedling method of reproduction is not used - the seeds are embedded immediately into the ground. Planting depth is about 0.5-1 cm.
Features of summer growing lettuce
For novice gardeners, the question may arise, why did the salad grow more slowly in the summer, and the crop yield decreased? The owner is not guilty of that, it's all about the peculiarities of the culture itself. Lettuce is a long day plant. And with summer crops, in conditions when the daytime becomes shorter, the rate of development of this plant begins to slow down.
However, efforts can be made to help the seedlings germinate as quickly as possible. You should know that when the thermometer rises above + 23 ° C, and there is a lack of moisture in the soil, the seeds may not germinate for a long time. To remedy the situation, you need to water new crops more often, but at the same time make a small amount of water. We must not forget that excessive humidity creates favorable conditions for the spread of fungal diseases.
The main care for re-crops will be:
• in irrigation;
• loosening the soil;
• weeding of beds from weeds.
If the plants are too thick, the salad will need to be thinned out. It is imperative to loosen before closing the rows.
Autumn harvesting and storage of crops
As a rule, the mass harvest of the repeated sowing of lettuce occurs at the end of September. Harvesting is best in the morning in dry weather. Pulling out along with the roots, the salad can be stored for a short time in shallow drawers.
Preparing the soil for early spring sowing
If in the next season it is also planned to sow this crop, you need to take care of the fertility of the soil in advance, since this is a very important factor for a salad. To do this, use in September:
• organic matter: humus, compost or rotted manure - up to 5 kg per 1 square meter;
• mineral fertilizers: nitrophosphate - up to 50 g per 1 sq. M.
One of the features of the salad is that it will not yield crops on acidic soils. Therefore, lovers of its vitamin greens will have to additionally lime the soil.
An interesting fact - lettuce belongs to cold-resistant crops, so experienced gardeners also practice podwinter sowing of this culture. This is done immediately before the onset of persistent frosts. As a rule, these dates fall on the second decade of November.
