According to the timing of the formation of the crown, shrubs are divided into two categories: one is cut off after flowering, the other before. The basis is the time when flower buds were laid: last season (summer-autumn) or now (spring-summer).

In the spring, regardless of the group classification, other cutting techniques are applied to these plants. After the snow melts, they need to thin out and remove deformed, sick, dried branches (sanitary pruning). I will list the pruning rules for all groups.
1. Weak, old, with signs of disease, the branches will not give full-fledged flowers, they need to be cut out without regret. Instances with coarse bark, cracks, spots, exfoliation are removed.
2. Before removing the old branch, its length is examined. If there is a well-located high-quality shoot, docking is done leaving this promising shoot and only the old part is cut off, which has lost its fertile strength.
3. Thickening of the crown weakens the plant, interferes with development, blocks the flow of the sun, creates an unsightly appearance. In this case, all intersecting shoots and crowns directed inward are removed.
Pruning is done in 2 steps. The first / rough before foliage appears, the second / final after bud break, when empty shoots with frozen tips became visible.
Spring pruning
When starting the formation of the crown, you need to know the peculiarities of the culture; in flowering species, this is the stage of laying flower buds. An error in the choice of timing will lead to the removal of flowering shoots.
Early flowering species lay buds in the summer or fall of the past season. Flower buds are located at the ends of the growths or on the lateral branches of two-year-old shoots. Stopping them deprives the plant of the opportunity to bloom.
In the spring, bushes that bloom from May to June are not pruned. This is the main rule to remember. Novice summer residents, when buying seedlings, should be interested in the bud formation period, then it will be easy to navigate the timing of the formative pruning. Chubushnik
A tall plant with intensive growth needs to be trimmed annually. Flowering occurs in early June at the ends of the branches. Pruning is done after bud shedding (end of June). Chubushnik / garden jasmine is prone to exposing branches (there is a void inside), therefore, naked shoots older than 8 years are completely removed to rejuvenate the crown.
Weigela
Abundantly flowering shrub, approximate budding time is end of May, duration 10-20 days. Pruning is carried out after all flowers have wilted, before the first growth. In the spring, during the period of foliage blooming, branches affected by frost are removed. Formation can be done every 2-3 years.
Lilac
Depending on the variety, the flowers bloom in late May or early June. After the flower panicles have dried, they are cut off. At the same time, the shoots that have formed at the end of the branches do not touch - these are poor peduncles. Work on the formation of the crown should be carried out annually or at intervals of 2-3 years.
Hydrangea
Large-leaved varieties form flower buds at the ends of last year's shoots. In the spring, an old, thickened bush can be thinned out, but not shortened the stems. The cropping of inflorescences is carried out after their wilting.
Barberry
Flowering begins at the end of May. Formation works take place from June to July. Almost all varieties of barberry are characterized by intensive growth (the length of a one-year-old shoot is 20-30 cm). Without regular shearing, the plant has a shapeless, crumbling crown.
Magonia
The plant belongs to early flowering, bright yellow flowers appear in May. To give a compact size, a beautiful shape, to avoid exposing branches, it is recommended to cut Mahonia every season (June-July). The branch is docked from one third to one half of its length.
Spirea
Many varieties of spirea are included in the early flowering group. In May-June, Vangutta, Nipponskaya, Dubravkolistnaya, Grefstein, Arguta, Thunberg, Golden, etc. are abundantly covered with buds. Deadwood is cut out in these varieties in spring, and the shaping haircut is done after flowering.
