August is the last month of summer, and, as many gardeners believe, the month in which it is too late to plant anything. So part of the beds is empty after harvesting onions, garlic, beets and other crops. In fact, August is a great month to plant some garden plants. You can not only "take" empty land, but also get a good harvest. What can you plant in August to get a good return?
Greens
This is probably the most versatile that grows in our garden area. By the way, greens can be sown not only in spring or August, they grow well at any time. There is a free bed? Use it with salad, spinach, sorrel. You can plant cilantro, dill. You can also "stick" onions and garlic on the greens. First, you will have greens all summer long, which can be added to salads, soups, borscht, and so on. Secondly, when the vegetable season wanes, the greens will still grow well and replenish your body with vitamins.
The only thing you need to pay attention to when buying salad seeds of any kind is information about which sowing it is intended for. Spring varieties go into the arrow faster, summer varieties delight with greens longer.
Radish
Despite the popular belief that radish is a spring vegetable, it grows well in the fall. The main condition for harvesting is a fairly short daylight hours. And in August, the daylight hours are no longer as long as at the beginning of summer. Moreover, it is constantly decreasing. With a long daylight hours, instead of a harvest, you get a gorgeous bouquet of arrows in the garden. So you can plant radishes in August, and even at the beginning of September (but for planting in September, choose early maturing varieties, such as the "18 days" variety).
By the way, some amateur gardeners claim that the autumn harvest is larger and juicier than the spring one. I cannot confirm, it seems to me that both autumn and spring radishes are equally tasty.
Daikon and radish
It’s time to sow these roots too. Daikon is generally recommended to be planted in early August and harvested in October. Radish can also be planted with daikon. Cucumber is considered to be the optimal “predecessor” for these crops. So, if you have a free bed on which cucumbers grew, then you can safely occupy it with root crops. If not, then we plant in any free area, except for those where cabbage or radish grew. All of these crops have the same pests, so there will be little sense from the planted vegetables.
When planting, the seeds do not need to be deeply buried in the soil, since the soil is well warmed up, and the temperature is above zero without the possibility of frost. The distance between rows should be about 30 centimeters, and between adjacent plants - about 15-20 centimeters.
Cabbage
In warm regions of our country, you can still manage to get a good harvest of any early ripe cabbage (white cabbage is suitable for planting, but you should not plant Peking cabbage!). Of course, it will not be suitable for storage, but it is perfect for salads, rolling and for fermentation. Seeds are sown in open ground, well watered. Can be mulched or covered with non-woven fabric. At the end of September there will already be a harvest.
Strawberry
Now you can leisurely start transplanting strawberries that have grown from an existing antennae. Well, or just thin out the bushes or plant purchased seedlings. She will have time to take root in a new place, and in the spring these bushes will already give the first, albeit small, harvest of fragrant berries.
By the way, if you plant strawberries now, then it will be possible not to cover them for the winter. She will have time to take root and will be able to endure the winter cold quite easily.
