Securinega (lat. Securinega) - a genus of shrubs and small trees of the Euphorbia family. The genus includes about 25 species, which grow mainly in the Mediterranean, South America, Africa and temperate and subtropical regions of Asia. In Russia, there is only one species - Securinega suffruticosa, or branch-flowered (Latin Securinega suffruticosa). This species is cultivated in the south of the Far East and in Eastern Siberia. Typical places are steppes, dry stony and gravelly slopes, rocky areas, forest edges and rare oak forests.
Characteristics of culture
Securinega is a shrub or undersized tree up to 4m high with one or two curved trunks covered with a rough gray bark. In diameter, the trunks reach 8-10 cm, in the upper part they are crowned with thin twig-like branches. Leaves are solid, medium-sized, elliptical, alternating. The flowers are small, fragrant, green or greenish-yellow, female solitary, male flowers are collected in few-flowered bunches. The fruits are spherical capsules, the valves of which crack when ripe. Securinega blooms in June - July, fruits ripen in September.
The subtleties of growing
Securinega is undemanding to soil conditions, but it develops better on light, fertile, moderately moist soils. Accepts podzolic soils with the introduction of organic matter and mineral fertilizers (ammonium nitrate and superphosphate), well-processed chernozems. Does not tolerate strongly acidic, waterlogged and saline soils.
Propagated by securinega seeds and cuttings. Seeds are sown in autumn under a shelter or in spring with preliminary cold stratification lasting 3-4 months at a temperature of 3C. Store seeds in glass containers or in tight bags in a cool, dry ventilated area. In the first years of life, plants need more careful care: regular watering, weeding and loosening.
Securinega grows quite quickly, the annual growth is 30-50 cm. In severe winters, the plants are very frozen, but this does not in any way affect the decorative properties of the culture. Frozen branches are removed in late May - early June. Securinega is practically not damaged by pests and diseases, however, sanitary treatments with natural infusions will not harm.
Application
Securinega is an excellent ornamental plant. The culture is appreciated for its unusual translucent openwork crown. Securinega looks great in single and group plantings. The culture will harmoniously fit into the automnaly, because in the fall its foliage acquires beautiful light yellow shades. The numerous boxes hanging on long pedicels give the plants a special charm.
Securinega is considered a valuable medicinal plant; drugs are made from it, which are used for diseases of the nervous system. Securinega is used for sexual weakness, serious asthenic conditions, paralysis of various kinds, neurasthenia, fatigue and nervous disorders. Securinega preparations are indispensable for heart weakness, burns, food intoxication and even fractures.
