Fat Helms (lat. Crassula helmsii) - an aquatic plant from the Tolstyankovye family.
Description
Fat Helms is a relatively low plant (its height almost never exceeds thirty centimeters), endowed with either underwater erect or ground-creeping branching stems. And the sessile fleshy leaves of this plant are always arranged crosswise-opposite. Rather sharp little leaf blades can be both lanceolate and linear. In underwater specimens, their width is on average one centimeter, and their length is one and a half centimeters, and in terrestrial inhabitants, the width of the leaves reaches two millimeters, and the length is one centimeter. All leaves are characterized by the presence of subtle veins and a pleasant light green color.
The bisexual flowers of Helms' fat woman are always solitary and often reach four millimeters in length (and with pedicels - three). Each flower is equipped with a short pistil, four carpels, four green sepals and four white triangular petals. And the flowers also have four stamens (all of them are much shorter than the petals).
Where grows
The Helms fat woman grows mainly in the waters of New Zealand, Australia and England. Even in spite of the fact that it was settled in England artificially, it perfectly took root there and quickly and actively began to displace other cultures. Most often, this plant can be seen in shallow bogs and along the edges of slow-flowing rivers.
Usage
Fat Helms is ideal for growing in aquariums - their design will only benefit from the presence of such a beauty.
Growing and caring
The conditions of cold water aquariums will be the most suitable for Helms. In principle, you can grow it in tropical vessels, but only for a short time and provided that the temperature in them does not rise above twenty-three degrees. If the thermometer begins to rise higher, the water beauty will get sick and die quickly enough. The Helms fat woman will develop very well in the terrestrial form - it can be grown both in paludariums and in humid greenhouses, and in the usual room conditions.
Water parameters and soil characteristics are of secondary importance for the development of this plant. A clear indication of good growth will be abundantly branching shoots. Under especially favorable conditions, the Helms fat woman is able to form incredibly beautiful decorative thickets. It does not need a water change in aquariums, and absolutely any substrate is suitable for its cultivation (the most suitable for this will be a nutritious soil with a substrate of gravel or pebbles, however, it is quite possible to use sand as well). The ideal temperature for the development of the Helms fatty will be in the range from twenty to twenty-three degrees, the hardness is best kept in the range from two to twenty degrees, and the acidity can vary from 5.0 to 8.0.
Fat Helms needs good lighting, so it should be placed in aquariums in relatively small groups and exclusively in the foreground. It is also important to ensure that nearby plants do not form a shadow - Helms' fat woman is very sensitive to shading and does not tolerate it very well. If there is a need to organize additional lighting for the plant, it is best to purchase fluorescent lamps for this purpose (0.5 W / l is considered the ideal power).
This aquatic beauty reproduces mainly vegetatively, and it does not require any special conditions of detention.
