Strawberry spinach is called a plant from the family Hibiscus. Often this culture is also called the capitate, which has been widespread in Russia since ancient times.

Strawberry spinach can be used for food already at the very beginning of spring, when the body especially needs a regular intake of vitamins. Strawberry spinach contains large amounts of proteins, carbohydrates, carotene and various minerals. The berries of this plant are very juicy, tasty and sweet. These fruits can be eaten fresh or used for making jam, compote, juice and wine. However, the leaves of the plant can be harvested before picking the berries. These leaves can be added to a variety of salads and are often harvested for the winter. The leaves should be cut off a little with the bush, and it is recommended to remove them completely only after harvesting.

Strawberry spinach is a herbaceous plant that can grow up to fifty centimeters tall. This plant will have a lot of side shoots. The berries are very similar to both strawberries and raspberries.

Plants are able to withstand frosts even up to ten degrees. Already after four days after the ovary, the first berries ripen. Due to the constant formation of new shoots, this culture can produce a crop literally until the very frost.

Growing and caring

In principle, this culture can grow on all cultivated soils, however, fertile soils, where a sufficient amount of sunlight comes in, are considered the best option. Wetlands are highly undesirable for strawberry spinach. The plant needs a sufficient amount of boron, otherwise such a deficiency can affect the fact that the buds begin to die off, and the young leaves will wither.

Culture propagation occurs by means of seeds from large berries. Strawberry spinach seeds are very small and are black in color, like poppy seeds. After the seeds have been extracted from the berries, they can be immediately used for sowing. The best time to harvest seeds is in late April or early May. If you plant dry seeds, the seedlings will appear by the end of the second week. As for the germinated seeds, they will give the first shoots already five days after sowing. It is recommended to germinate the seeds of this culture in a warm place in a wet cloth. Due to the small size of the seeds, they are sown directly into the surface of the soil.

The soil for this crop should always be moist, it is not recommended to allow the formation of a crust. You can sow seeds not only in the beds, but also in greenhouses and seedling boxes.

On dry days, plants need constant watering, and when the formation and ripening of berries occurs, then fertilizing should be done with the infusion of ash. After watering has been carried out, you should loosen the soil and get rid of weeds. Due to the abundant fruiting of the plant of strawberry spinach shoots, a regular garter is necessary, as well as supports, which will not allow the shoots to lie on the soil.

A month and a half after the first shoots appear, the first berries will begin to ripen. You can pick berries all summer, literally right up to frost. Seeds should be taken only from the largest berries.

It will be quite easy to choose berries for seeds, because one bush can give about two liters of a crop.

The berries do not contain any acid, therefore, very often strawberry spinach is added to jam from those berries that have high acidity. Wine can also be made from the berries of this culture: this drink will have a pleasant delicate taste and amazing aroma.

Kvass can be made from strawberry spinach. This will require unwashed berries: they will contain natural yeast. On the floor of a part of the berries, you need to take one part of boiled water and a sufficient amount of sugar. The ingredients are mixed by weight and poured into one bottle. After a few days, the liquid is filtered and then the kvass is already considered ready.
