Gentian (Latin Gentiana) - This is a genus of annual or perennial shrubs and grasses, representing the Gentian family.

Description

The gentian is a plant whose height varies from twenty centimeters to one and a half meters. Its stems are usually straight and rather short, and the short and thick roots of the plant are generously strewn with thin cord-like roots. The gentian leaves are whole, sessile and oppositely located.

The flowers of the gentian are either single or few in number. As a rule, they are always five-membered, however, sometimes there are four-membered specimens. Most of the flowers boast a rich blue, blue or purple color, but there are also species whose flowers are painted in white or yellow. The corolla of flowers can be both bell-shaped and funnel-shaped, and sometimes there are also corollas in the form of plates. As for the flowering periods, it completely depends on the species in the gentian - this plant can bloom in spring, summer, and even autumn.

Gentian fruits are bivalve capsules growing from unilocular ovaries with a huge number of seeds inside.

Where grows

The gentian can be seen in almost all corners of the globe, but the traditional area of its distribution is the Northern Hemisphere (more precisely, its temperate zone). And some of its varieties feel great on subalpine and luxurious alpine meadows.

Popular varieties

In general, the genus Gentian accumulates about four hundred and twenty species, among which there are the most popular.

Gentian tricolor. This variety is often referred to as the three-flowered gentian. It is a herbaceous perennial, the height of which varies from thirty to forty centimeters. Its goblet-shaped flowers are painted in a pleasant bright blue color and reach seven centimeters in diameter.

Gusset gentian. This is a fairly tall (up to sixty - sixty-five centimeters tall) plant that delights the eyes of others with abundant flowering. The bushes of the ginseng gentian are always very dense - during each season more than a dozen young shoots are formed on them. The nutrition of these bushes is provided by very thick and strong enough roots, which capture a fairly solid part of the surrounding soil for nutrition. The flowers of this variety are equipped with five petals and have the shape of a small bell. Almost always they are blue, but sometimes the rarest snow-white options come across. And the gusset gentian blooms in August or September.

Decorated Chinese gentian. This beauty is one of the last to bloom (from September to December), so it can be found especially often in the Russian open spaces. This species cannot be scared even by snow and cold. The height of adult specimens is about fifteen centimeters, and they bloom with delicate blue flowers.

The gentian is cruciform. She also has other names - cross-leaved or cruciform gentian. This name hides a herbaceous perennial up to half a meter high, endowed with elongated leaves and densely leafy stems. Inside, all the flowers are painted in pleasant turquoise tones, while outside they are always grayish-greenish.

Seven-part gentian. One of the most unassuming types. The height of this bushy plant can reach thirty centimeters, and the diameter of its purple-bluish flowers ranges from five to seven centimeters. It is ideal for growing in gardens.

The gentian is rough. This perennial is endowed with a cord-like rhizome and several medium-sized stems, and its flowers boast graceful five-petal corollas of an amazing cornflower blue color.
