After all, the snow will not have time to descend into the ground, and six purple petals of an amazingly delicate bell in a light silver fur coat are reaching for the spring sun, triumphing the awakening of nature from winter sleep

The genus Lumbago (Pulsatilla) has about 30 species of perennial herbaceous plants, which are among the first to herald the awakening of the creative forces of nature.

A long frost-resistant rhizome first of all awakens fearless peduncles to life, which, making their way in the snow, show the world single large flowers, more often of a rich purple color. By the time the bell-shaped flowers wilt, similar to miniature tulips, pinnate or finger-dissected leaves appear, collected in a basal rosette. For this dissection of graceful leaves, the plant received the name "Lumbago".

Many folk legends are associated with the name "Sleep-grass", which tell about the events in which the plant demonstrated its ability to induce sleep on people and animals.

And we called this cute flower "Snowdrop". We were not alone in our delusions, because many flowers that announced the arrival of spring were called snowdrops. In addition to Lumbago, people called anemones, snowdrops and other early spring flowers snowdrops.

Love at first sight

Some people don't believe that there is love at first sight. I also think that love is like Snowdrop. She is born gradually, deep in her soul, and then suddenly emerges and blooms in full force when the right moment comes. Once I even had such simple lines:

Opened backache (Pulsatilla patens) - it is called "sleep-herb". For snowdrops, he is quite tall, reaching 45 centimeters, and a love of sunny meadows. Soft hairs covering the stem and young leaves save it from the cold spring. The violet-blue flowers are broadly bell-shaped and very decorative. The plant is both poisonous and healing at the same time. The main thing is to know when to stop.

Alpine lumbago (Pulsatilla alpina) is a shorter plant growing up to 30 cm in height. Prefers mountainous landscapes. Erect peduncles end in yellow, white or pinkish flowers.

Spring lumbago (Pulsatilla vernalis) - a strongly pubescent perianth protects a delicate purple flower crowning a 20 cm peduncle. The leaves form a basal rosette.

Common lumbago (Pulsatilla vulgaris) - the height of a herbaceous plant is from 10 to 30 cm. Leaves and flowers are covered with silvery soft hairs. The color of flowers in nature is light purple. Garden forms bred by breeders are distinguished by large flowers with a bright color: black-red or red-purple.

Growing

Disappearing in the wild due to the barbaric attitude of people, today lumbago move to gardens, where they are lovingly grown by flower growers. Fortunately, frosts, which many plants are so afraid of, are not afraid of them. At the same time, they love sunny places.

They prefer fertile soil, well moistened, without stagnant water. Watering needs frequent. Transplanting mature plants is not recommended.

Reproduction

Freshly harvested seeds are sown in containers in June or late autumn. Seedlings are closed from severe frosts, seated in separate pots in the spring. Only at the end of summer next year, seedlings are planted in open ground.
