In March, the flowering period of Saintpaulia begins. At this time, shop windows are full of delicate purple petals against a background of bright green foliage, announcing that spring has finally come into its own. But it often happens that, having migrated from the store counter to our houses and apartments, a capricious flower begins to dry, shed its leaves, buds and, it seems, is about to die! What needs to be done to prevent this from happening?
Guest from the Uzambar Mountains
The homeland of Saintpaulia, also known as the Usambar violet, is East Africa. This incredibly beautiful plant can bloom for about 10 months a year. But in order for this period to stretch for at least six months, the plant must be provided with favorable conditions for this.
Watering features
Saintpaulia has a special relationship with moisture. It is not recommended to wash its leaves. Take a closer look at the surface of the leaves - they are covered with fine hairs. Falling between them, drops of water do not evaporate and the leaves rot from this. Therefore, although it is not forbidden to water the plants in the usual way, in order to avoid such negative phenomena, it is better to practice moistening the substrate through the sump. However, after each watering, care must be taken to ensure that the water does not stagnate in the sump. It is useful to place containers of liquid and containers of wet moss near the pots.
Water for irrigation must be properly prepared. First of all, tap water is defended during the day. In addition, you need to ensure that the water is 3-4 ° warmer than the air temperature of the room where the pot with the plant is kept. When the difference in this value exceeds 5 °, brown and pale spots appear on the leaves.
A few words about room temperature
The optimum temperature for keeping Saintpaulias is + 20 … + 25 ° С. When this indicator drops to + 15 ° С, the growth processes slow down, and then stop altogether, and it will not be possible to wait for flowering under such conditions.
A suitable place for the uzambara violet
The place for Saintpaulia is selected taking into account that the lighting is long and intense. At the same time, the light needs diffused. When plants lack light, they refuse to bloom. This is evidenced by the absence of buds with the simultaneous elongation of leaves on long petioles. If a window is chosen as a permanent residence for Saintpaulias, they check to see if the flowers and leaves are blowing. Drafts for the uzambar violet are fatal.
The pots need space, so you can't put them too close to each other and heap. Carefully make sure that the leaves do not come into contact with each other - this can provoke rotting of the greenery.
A sissy violet may surprise you with the fact that the leaves will deteriorate even from contact with the edges of their own pot. Therefore, for prevention, the edges of the vessels are rubbed with paraffin.
How to replace the rosettes with peduncles?
If you are buying an adult plant, ask how it was propagated. Often, Saintpaulias grown from cuttings make you wait a long time for the appearance of buds. And the fact is that with this method of reproduction, plants are predisposed to strong bushiness. In the sinuses, more and more young rosettes are formed instead of the expected peduncle with buds. And in order for the latter to appear, the violet will need the help of a florist. For this purpose, an operation is performed to remove the sockets. Over time, the flower will cease to bush, and the long-awaited buds will appear.
Transplant and feeding
Saintpaulias are transplanted at least once a year. In this case, the plants are immersed in the substrate deeper than before, which is why new roots are formed on the elongated stems.
The Uzambara violet is responsive to fertilizer diluted with water with cow dung. In addition, it is recommended to apply full mineral fertilizers annually. Saintpaulias are fed with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compounds.
