Sowing flowers in December

It is possible to sow many plants before winter not only in November, but even in December along the so-called ice crust. This means that the earth is already frozen, thaws are not expected, the seeds will undergo natural stratification and in the spring they will give friendly healthy shoots. These plants include a large number of decorative flowering garden plants. And among others, those that grow even worse if sowing in the spring

Benefits of winter and winter crops

It is too early to plant crops in the fall. Especially when there are such warm autumn days as this year. Florists begin to sow when, in their natural conditions, the seeds would still ripen in capsules and remain on the plant. And once in the ground too early, the seeds, feeling warm, may germinate too early. And with the arrival of winter and frost, the sprouts do not survive until spring. And therefore, many are afraid to carry out podzimny crops, not knowing such a feature. After all, the sprout might not have appeared from under the ground, but here the cold comes, and it will not rise.

But if you sow seeds before winter, when the air temperature does not rise above zero during the day, and frosts already come at night, they will not have time to germinate. The seeds will remain dormant and undergo a natural winter cooling cycle. Then they will get wet and saturated with moisture with the arrival of the spring thaw. And after that they will sprout at the most appropriate time. For the same reason, it is good to sow tough-like seeds of dill, carrots and other seeds that contain essential oils before winter.

So, what flowers are not scary to sow in December? The list is very wide. In this list:

• aquilegia;

• aster;

• cornflowers;

• delphinium;

• calendula;

• cleoma;

• kosmeya;

• lupine;

• rudbeckia;

• echinacea;

• escholzia.

Gardeners often propagate these flowers by seedlings. But you will free yourself up both time and space in the room if you sow these flowers in advance directly into the ground in late autumn or early winter.

In addition, like many other plants, those flowers that in the seed stage undergo natural stratification, cooling in winter, and then, thoroughly soaking in the soil in the spring with the arrival of a thaw, turn out to be much stronger, healthier, and bloom better.

Another benefit of such plants is that many of them reproduce by self-seeding. That is, having sown such flowers once on your site, with the arrival of autumn, do not cut off withered and dried bolls and flower stalks. Let the seeds ripen and scatter over the area. Then next spring they will rise on their own without your participation.

The only thing that can prevent the seeds from sprouting is pecking by birds. Therefore, both when sowing on frozen soil, and after self-sowing, it is good to grind the seeds with dry earth or sand.

There is no need to water the crops. You should also not soak and dress the seeds. But it is advisable to treat the soil shortly before sowing from pathogens. A good way is to ignite the ground. This can be done right on the site. To do this, make a fire at the sowing site, in which you need to burn unnecessary logs, cut branches and other wooden waste. This is how they fight against causative agents of fungal diseases. And do not remove the remaining ash from the site. Spread it over the ground in a thin layer. And scatter the seeds right on top of the ashes.

If these are flowers, the seeds of which need to be buried a little, then also arrange shallow grooves over the ashes. And then on top, grind dry soil with sand or loose soil mixture for indoor plants or for seedlings.

What to consider when planting in winter. Not all seeds germinate, so the sowing rate needs to be increased. It is advisable to mulch the bed with at least fallen leaves. And in winter, if possible, cover with snow.
