There are many ways to reproduce cherries: grafting, cuttings, shoots. In the first half of June, the optimal conditions are formed for choosing the method of cuttings. At this moment, the process of intensive growth of shoots occurs. Right now, the lower part of the shoots begins to lignify, while the upper part is still soft

Benefits of vegetative propagation by cuttings

Reproduction by cuttings has many advantages. First of all, the gardener will get a rooted plant from green cuttings, and in comparison with other methods of propagation, such a plant is distinguished by a higher resistance to freezing and the ability to quickly recover.

In addition, it is a relatively fast method of reproduction, since only to grow a rootstock from a seed will require a long stratification of about 200 days, not to mention sowing and direct growing of a tree. When propagated by green cuttings, the timing of growing planting material is much more modest, and the reproductive rate is much higher.

Nursery device in a greenhouse

By the time of cuttings, you need to prepare a special nursery. An ordinary greenhouse is suitable for this. For the cultivation of future seedlings, the fertile layer is prepared from:

• peat - 1 part;

• river sand - 1 part.

From the prepared mixture, arrange in a greenhouse a bed 10-12 cm thick. The surface must be well leveled and another layer of clean sand about 1 cm thick should be laid on top.

Harvesting cuttings

For harvesting cuttings, it is recommended to choose long shoots, the size of which ranges from 25-30 cm. It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that most of the buds are growth buds. The cuttings are moistened with leaves and the collected material is placed in a bucket of water.

Cuttings are cut from the harvested shoots, measuring the length of about 5-7 cm. Each one should have a pair of internodes. It has been noticed that the tops of the shoots of branches and those that are cut close to it are distinguished by the best productivity.

On each cutting, the leaves are cut in half. The next stage is the processing of the sections with growth stimulants. One of these phytohormones is heteroauxin. For the convenience of processing, the cuttings are tied into bundles. The stimulant is diluted with water at the rate of 250 g of the drug per 1 liter of water. The solution is poured into a wide container so that the slices are immersed in the liquid to a height of about 2 cm. In this position, they are left overnight, and in the morning you can start planting.

Planting cuttings in the nursery

Before planting the prepared cuttings, the substrate is moistened and lightly tamped. Planting is performed in rows at a distance of 7 x 5 cm from each other. The cutting depth is about 3-5 cm. You need to be guided by the height of the lower leaf - the soil level should be right at its petiole.

Rooting of cuttings takes about a month. At this time, the greenhouse will need to be shaded from the bright sun. The leaves of the cuttings should be regularly moistened with a spray bottle. It is also necessary to carry out watering, for this the land is irrigated carefully, from a watering can.

When the first roots are formed, airing is arranged on hot summer days, raising the shelter of the greenhouse. After 4-5 weeks, the cuttings will have to massively acquire roots. From this moment, the film is removed from the nursery. Simultaneously with the removal of the shelter, the first fertilizing with mineral fertilizers is carried out. After 2 weeks, the plantings are re-fertilized with slurry.

For the winter, cuttings can be left in the nursery, covered with peat. Some gardeners prefer to dig up the planting material and send it to the basement for the winter. In the spring they are raised in the school. And in the fall, the seedlings will be ready for planting in the garden.
