Eggshells, yogurt containers, cardboard sleeves, kefir bags … - there can be many options. Let's talk about unusual varieties of containers for seedlings
To grow seedlings, you can use the most incredible things: lemon peels, eggshells, newspapers, toilet paper and other improvised means. Here are some examples.
1. Unusual containers for growing seedlings
* Half a lemon will make a beautiful house for a small seedling.
* Eggshells will be an ideal pot for sowing seedlings.
* When buying yogurt for children in small cups, do not throw out the empty dishes in which you can grow seedlings.
* Seedling pots can be made independently from ordinary newspapers, which must be twisted in a couple of layers, securing the bottom of the resulting cup with tape. The use of paper is convenient because, when planting sprouts in the ground, you can easily tear and throw out the paper.
* Cutting off the plastic bottle can make a great seedling pot.
* When using milk or plastic bags to germinate seeds, an ideal greenhouse environment is created.
* Do not throw away the ice trays if they are unusable - this is an excellent container for sowing seedlings.
2. Using wooden crates
Until relatively recently, the only available container in which seedlings were grown was a homemade wooden box. For its manufacture, gardeners used boards, plywood and packing boards. The size and depth of the boxes varied widely. They were used for sowing tomatoes, less often for peppers, white cabbage. At that time, leeks, root celery, broccoli were still a rarity.
The use of wooden boxes is still popular today when landscaping balconies or windows. This container is convenient for plants, the root system of which receives a sufficient amount of oxygen. Bulky and heavy containers are inconvenient for transportation, therefore they are rarely used.
3. Growing seedlings in reusable plastic cups
The use of transparent plastic cups for growing seedlings is not recommended, since light is harmful to the roots of plants - they grow worse. It is better to give preference to white or colored cups. Transporting seedlings in them is convenient and easy. In addition, they are easy to place on windowsills. When transplanting seedlings from cups into the beds, it is not necessary to make an additional pick - it will take root perfectly anyway.
4. Using tea bags
Do not dispose of used tea bags - this is a breeding ground for seeds.
* Tea bags are prepared in advance.
* Their tops are cut off with scissors, dry soil is added to the remaining tea leaves in them, and then the bags are folded into a container for growing seedlings.
* In order for the bags to be stable, and the moisture does not evaporate quickly, put paper or cotton wool between them.
* One or two seeds are sown in a bag, the substrate is moistened. It is necessary to moisturize the bags regularly so that their contents do not dry out.
* When real leaves appear, the seedlings are planted in the ground directly in bags.
5. Use of sawdust
Bulk sawdust has a light and friable structure, which allows a safe picking of not matured seedlings. Sawdust is used for growing seedlings of squash, cucumber, pumpkin, watermelon, melon:
* The bottom of the landing box is covered with plastic wrap. Prepared fresh sawdust is scalded with boiling water to remove the resin, and then poured into a box. Layer thickness 6-7 cm.
* From above, using a wooden stick, grooves are made, the distance between which is 5 cm. The distance between the seeds should be 2-3 cm. The seeds are sprinkled with moistened sawdust (layer - 1 cm), and the box is covered with foil.
* Drying sawdust is moistened with warm water. As soon as shoots have appeared, the film is removed and the box is set to light. Seedlings are watered and fed in a timely manner using a solution of mullein in water in a ratio of 1:10.
* After a maximum of two weeks, the seedlings are planted in the ground.
6. Using plastic wrap and plastic bags
In this way, seedlings are grown after picking. Many gardeners use this simple, convenient and economical technology, which allows replanting seedlings without damaging their weak and fragile root system.
