The season for fresh strawberries is quite short, and you really want to feast on these fragrant berries for as long as possible! To realize this desire, it is important to learn how to properly store strawberries. By the way, there are many options for preserving it, and thanks to some of them, you can enjoy juicy berries throughout the year
The refrigerator is a great place
You can save fragrant strawberries in the refrigerator in a variety of ways: in food containers, as well as in a colander and even on an ordinary baking sheet.
To store strawberries in open containers, it is enough to free the berries from the packaging and carefully fold them into containers. And before you put strawberries in them, they are lined with paper towels that will absorb excess moisture from the berries. Once all the containers are filled with strawberries, they are placed in the refrigerator.
To preserve strawberries in closed containers, it must be peeled beforehand, freeing each berry from the stalk. It is recommended to cover the bottoms of the container with paper towels, and put the berries on top of them with their noses up. In order for them to last as long as possible, it is important to ensure that they do not come into contact with each other. When all the berries are packed, the containers are closed with lids and the date of packaging is indicated on them. Then the container with strawberries is sent to the refrigerator.
Some housewives store strawberries in a colander - it allows the stored berries to breathe. That is why it is not recommended to tamp them too tightly in a colander. The colander filled with strawberries is placed in the refrigerator.
It will not be difficult to keep the harvested strawberries on the kitchen baking sheet. For this, the berries are cleaned, freeing from the stalks, and placed with their noses up. For a longer preservation of the berries, it is desirable that they do not touch each other. When all the berries are laid, the baking sheet is sent to the refrigerator.
Magic freezer
In the freezer, just like in the refrigerator, ripe strawberries are also stored perfectly. Having cut off the stalks, the berries are laid out on a baking sheet in a thin layer, after which they are placed in the freezer for several hours so that they freeze. The frozen strawberries are transferred to a clean container, immediately closed with a lid and placed in the freezer - they can easily be stored for up to six months. By the way, in the absence of containers, almost any tightly closing container can be adapted for storing berries.
Strawberries can survive in sugar just as well. The berries, cut into slices or into two halves, are placed in a bowl and covered with sugar, spending half a cup of sugar for each liter of berries. All ingredients must be mixed until the sugar is completely dissolved, and then the strawberries must be packed in freezer containers.
You can also store strawberries in plain syrup. It is prepared from a cup of sugar and four cups of water. Before using it, it is important to make sure that the sugar is safely dissolved and the syrup itself has cooled. Whole strawberries are placed in a container and poured with syrup, spending from one third to half a cup of syrup for each half liter container.
Another effective option for storing fragrant strawberries is bags with zip fasteners. Peeled and washed strawberries are cut in half, put in a bowl and lightly sprinkled with sugar (one part is enough for six parts of berries). In order for the sugar to be evenly distributed, the berries are slightly mixed, after which they are given another five to ten minutes so that they have time to absorb the sugar. And only after that, the berries are transferred to a large bag with a zip-fastener and sent to the freezer.
You can also save strawberries as ice cubes. Washed and peeled berries are placed in a blender bowl, after which a teaspoon of lemon juice is added there. With the help of a blender, all the strawberries are turned into a homogeneous mass and the crushed berries are distributed in ice molds, which are subsequently placed in the freezer.
