How to store turnips properly

You can talk endlessly about the benefits of turnips. It is rich in fiber, potassium salts, carotene, as well as vitamins PP and C. Turnip is a truly indispensable product for low-calorie diets designed to feed people suffering from obesity and diabetes mellitus. In addition, it is one of the most effective remedies for the healing and treatment of the intestines. It is not so difficult to save turnips if you listen to the recommendations of experienced gardeners and take them into service

Turnip harvesting

Summer planting turnips are harvested in one step in September-October. To prevent nutritious root crops from overgrowing, it is better not to pull with their harvesting. Dig them out very carefully so as not to accidentally touch the peel and damage it, otherwise you can forget about the good safety of the turnip.

The roots extracted from the soil are freed from the earth and from the leaves. At the same time, in the sun, unlike many other garden counterparts, they should not be left. However, in any case, turnips need to be thoroughly dried.

Young root vegetables are best suited for storage. As a rule, they differ in relatively small size (about the size of a cam) and smooth skin. At the same time, there should be no cracks or damage on the skin. Such root vegetables are characterized by a more delicate taste and greater softness. And in order to select a turnip for storage without voids, each root crop must be "weighed" as it were in the hand - high-quality root crops will seem very weighty and dense.

As for the early sowing turnip, it is best to eat it as soon as possible, since it is unsuitable for storage.

Turnip storage

Turnips are best kept in cellars with cellars. To keep the roots better, the stems are trimmed about two to three inches above the roots. After that, in order to remove the soil, turnips must be thoroughly washed. Damaged and rotten specimens must be discarded.

Before starting to put the harvested crop in boxes, sprinkle the cut tops of the root crops with chalk. And it is recommended to sprinkle turnips placed in a box with slightly moistened sand.

Suitable for storing turnip crops and spacious containers with smooth surfaces. Wire, branches and other scratching parts can easily damage root crops, which will lead to their decay, so it is better to refuse containers with similar characteristics. However, turnips will be well kept in good-quality bags.

To protect the roots from unwanted moisture, you can use plastic bags in which small holes are made on both sides. Such openings are essential for good ventilation of the turnip.

If there is a freezer in the basement, great: the turnip will be kept great. Just before storing root vegetables, the temperature in the freezer should be set in the range of thirty-two to forty degrees Fahrenheit.

Another option for storing turnips is considered to be buckets placed on the windows of the basement. Thanks to the wells in the turnips windows, moderately humid and cool storage conditions will be provided.

When storing nutritious root vegetables in the basement, you must carefully monitor the temperature - it should not be higher than forty degrees Fahrenheit. The most optimal conditions for the best preservation of turnips are considered to be a temperature from zero to minus one degree Celsius and an air humidity of at least 95%. And, of course, periodically you need to inspect the stored root crops, removing decaying and decaying specimens so that they do not have time to infect their neighbors.

During storage, it is important to isolate turnips from any fruits, as they can systematically rot (especially for apples), thereby provoking infection of the harvested root crops.

If the turnip is stored in an apartment, then it should be placed in a cold place with a rather low temperature. The best solution, of course, is a refrigerator.
