Onions grow in almost all corners of the globe, but in different latitudes they also require different care. Under the conditions of our climate, this culture is cultivated as a two-year one, and therefore the conditions of care in the beds where the seeding grows is different from the one where the turnip is already ripening. What does each of them need in July?
Seed Onion Care
Every experienced gardener knows that in order to get high-quality onions from seeds, he needs fertilization and feeding. However, in July, vegetables that have been planted with seeds or propagated through seedlings are no longer fertilized with nitrogen. If you continue to fertilize, this will delay the ripening of the onion: by the time of harvest, the bulb will still have juicy thick necks, and this negatively affects keeping quality.
When propagating by seeds on sowing, it is advisable to remember such a rule for applying top dressing. They should be applied after 1-2 true leaves appear on the soil surface. Calculations are performed as follows:
• ammonium nitrate - 5 g per 1 sq. M. area;
• superphosphate - 9 g;
• potassium chloride - 3 g.
Care consists in loosening, weeding from weeds, 3-4 waterings over the summer. Watering should not be continued before harvesting onions. Signs that this period is close are evidenced by:
• lack of new leaves;
• drying out of the tips of old leaves;
• lodging of leaves;
• bulbs begin to protrude above the ground;
• their shape takes on the outlines characteristic of this variety;
• the color of the scales appears characteristic of onions.
The first harvest of onions from the set
In July, onions grown from seed sets begin to ripen. The mass harvest falls at the beginning of autumn, but already in the middle of summer, in some places the leaves completely lay down, which means that it is time to get the "turnip" out of the ground. Check the dug out onion. If she is mature, then:
• will be covered with dry scales;
• firm enough to the touch;
• neck - soft and dry;
• the roots will be withered.
Such onions, harvested in the middle of summer, are stored worse than the turnips of the autumn harvest. Therefore, it should be eaten before the arrival of the winter months. And use onions with an inner arrow in cooking right away. However, these bows also require preparation before storing if large quantities have to be collected from the site. To do this, the crop is left to dry in the garden. They are folded on the ground in such an order that the leaves lie to one side and do not fall on the turnip of the bulb. Leaves are cut off dried specimens, leaving a tail 4-5 cm long. It is convenient to keep them in wicker baskets.
Plant protection
In July, they protect plants from diseases and continue to fight against pests that attack onion beds. This month begins the second years of the onion fly. To scare them away from the beds, the grooves along the rows are sprinkled with tobacco dust, peat, ash. Some gardeners use a mixture of naphthalene and sand for this purpose.
In the fight against parasites, the beneficial neighborhood of vegetables helps a lot. So, if you plant onions and carrots next to each other, the smell of onions will scare off the carrot fly, while the aroma of onions will warn the beds from carrot flies.
Eat a bow of a large hunter beetle secretive. Its harmful activity is signaled by yellowed leaves from above, which soon become dry and die off. Its presence is also betrayed by narrow white stripes along the leaves. They need to be cut and destroyed. To scare off the beetle, it is recommended to spray the plantings with an infusion of ash and soap.
If downy mildew is found on onion plantings, diseased plants should be immediately removed and destroyed, as it is extremely infectious. To carry out the prevention of a seemingly healthy crop (not only from false dew, but also from other fungal diseases), after digging the onion before storing it for storage, it is advisable not only to dry it, but also to warm it up additionally.
