Sweet pepper seedlings are grown for about 60-75 days. But in order for it to become strong and healthy, the gardener will spend much more time, because you need to prepare the seeds, make up a nutrient substrate, and disinfect the containers for sowing. What else do you need to get your own bell pepper seedlings?

Disease prevention

Plant diseases are contagious and very easily transmitted from one to another. The task of the gardener is to prevent this from happening. Therefore, before sowing seeds for seedlings, it is imperative to take care of disinfecting the pots, soil and seed. The seedling containers must be washed thoroughly. Rinse wooden boxes with boiling water, wipe plastic pots and cups with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. If mold is found in old pots, it is better to replace them with new containers.

Seedling soil should also be disinfected, whether it be a substrate from a specialty store or a composition prepared personally. In any of the components, pathogens can lurk imperceptibly and wait in the wings. To process the soil, it should be calcined in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Before planting seeds, the ground is additionally disinfected with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

Seed treatment

It will be useful to treat your seeds with a solution of potassium permanganate. However, this procedure is carried out after the seed germination test has been performed. The peculiarity of the seed material of bell peppers is that their shelf life is very short, and after 2 years they begin to lose their qualities. Therefore, in order not to waste neither space nor time, before sowing, you need to check them for germination. This is not difficult. For this:

1. Dissolve 2-3 tablespoons in 1 liter of water. tablespoons of table salt.

2. The seeds are immersed in salt water for 10 minutes.

3. floating seeds are discarded, and those that have sunk to the bottom are used for sowing.

To improve the quality of seeds, they should be enriched with beneficial trace elements. This is a very simple procedure that requires wood ash. A few days before sowing, the raw material is infused for a day in a liter of water, and then the seeds hidden in a gauze bag are left in this solution for 3-4 hours. After processing, the seeds must be washed and dried.

Sowing seeds for seedlings

The result will be better if the peppers are sown with sprouted seeds. They are laid out in grooves arranged in the soil at a distance of about 5 cm. The depth of embedding into the ground is no more than 2 cm. The distance between the rows is maintained at least 3 cm.

The first week, crops are left near a window that faces the south side. The room temperature should be at + 15 ° С. In the future, it is increased to + 22 ° C. Watering during the month is carried out with regularity once a week. This requires settled water at room temperature. Before picking the seedlings, one top dressing is carried out with liquid fertilizer. You can use a solution of calcium nitrate for this (1 tablespoon for 1 bucket of water).

Pepper seedling care

When the seedlings have 2 true leaves, it means that it's time to dive the seedlings. It is carried out in the following sequence:

1. 2-3 hours before the procedure, water the container with seedlings.

2. In cups with a diameter of no more than 10 cm, arrange a drainage layer and fill with a nutrient mixture for seedlings.

3. the seedlings are removed from the container and immersed in the holes of the new pots one at a time, deepening to the cotyledonous leaves.

When picking, you need to pay attention to the root of the seedling. If it starts to rot or has grown too long, there will be no trouble if it is shortened.

After picking, the seedlings must be protected from direct sunlight. When the plants take root, they will need to be hardened. To do this, they are taken out into fresh air and left for a short time. The first days air and sun baths take no more than 15 minutes. In the future, this time is extended, bringing up to 2 hours.
