More recently, peach has been registered only in the southern regions of our country. Every year he is making big strides to the Volga and more northern regions. The territory of the Nizhny Novgorod region is not the limit for him. How do they manage to successfully grow southern fruit in Central Russia?

Experiment start

Two seedlings were purchased by an enthusiastic gardener more than 20 years ago in Primorye. Standard cultivation techniques for southern crops: covering technology and shale formation of seedlings, recommended for the Volga region, did not fit due to the limited area of the site, lack of time.

Peaches are planted in a high place, protected from cold winds by buildings, a fence. Being sunny all day helps to keep the temperature in an enclosed space naturally 5 degrees higher than in other places.

The small western slope increases the number of warm days, keeps the seedling from recurrent spring frosts, and creates natural drainage. The water on the site does not linger, flowing into the lowland.

The original soil is of heavy clay composition, the fertile layer is no more than 20-25 cm.

Landing site preparation

The diameter and depth of the pit for planting seedlings were 70 cm. The original soil was replaced with a prepared mixture of rotted manure, garden fertile soil, river sand with shells in equal parts.

For top dressing, 200 g of potassium sulfate, 300 g of double superphosphate, 2 liters of deciduous ash were introduced for the entire volume. The last component acts as a supplier of calcium, potassium, magnesium and other trace elements, is an excellent disinfectant material.

The mixture is put into the pit. A hill with a diameter of 150 cm and a height of 25 cm is poured from above. At different levels: at the top and bottom, drainage ditches are dug to drain excess water. They protect the root collar from damping out. They are connected to each other by two sinks from opposite sides.

Preparation of the site for peaches has been carried out since autumn. During the winter, the soil will settle well and be compacted. If this operation is carried out simultaneously with planting, then during the shrinkage process, the roots of the plant may be damaged.

Landing

In the spring, a hole is dug at the top of the mound with a diameter and depth of 30-40 cm. Pour water over, set the tree vertically, straighten the roots, sprinkle with the prepared mixture. Compact the soil around the trunk. Water abundantly on top, allowing the top layer to finally settle. Add 5 cm of mulching material: sawdust, humus, peat. The root collar is located 3-5 cm above the ground surface.

A peg is driven in, the plant is tied with twine at a height of 0.5 m from the ground. The distance to the nearest neighbors is 5-6 m.

The operation is carried out until the kidneys swell. Autumn planting of peaches in the Middle lane is not desirable. Suddenly frosts without snow will not allow the seedlings to prepare for a good wintering. The weakened plant will freeze out before it takes root.

Sapling selection advice

When buying planting material in the market or in a store, adhere to the following rules:

1. Give preference to varieties that are acclimatized in the area.

2. The number of branches is not less than 4 pieces.

3. Barrel diameter 2 cm.

4. The height of the tree is 1.5 m.

5. Varieties of predominantly early ripening, mid-season in more southern regions.

6. The roots on the cut are light, without darkening.

7. The bark is clean, smooth, no growths, spots, swelling, cracks.

8. Age 1-2 years. Young trees are better acclimatized to new conditions.

9. Grafting from the root system is at a height of at least 7 cm.

10. The buds are slightly swollen, without leaves.

A healthy seedling is half the success of an excellent culture acceptance. Strong plants suffer less from diseases, pests, grow the crown faster, and endure harsh winter conditions more easily. Do not succumb to the persuasion of sellers, meticulously inspect the planting material. Pick the best specimen possible. Then success will always be on your side.
