Despite the nasty weather and the desire to stay at home, drinking hot tea with cookies (well, or with candy), you will still have to finish preparing the garden-garden-dacha before winter. So, some of the work has already been done and you can forget about it, but there are still some very important things ahead. For example, pre-winter watering and final preparation of trees for wintering

Pre-winter watering of trees

Is he needed at all? Maybe you shouldn't bother with it and water it? In fact, sub-winter watering is a very useful thing for trees, especially for this year's seedlings.

Firstly, wet soil freezes to a shallower depth than dry soil, which means that by carrying out such a simple operation as watering the trees before winter, we protect the tree roots from freezing. Secondly, the soil moistened to a depth of one meter makes it possible to increase the winter hardiness of fruit trees, since often freezing occurs due to a lack of moisture in the soil. Thirdly, as a result of pre-winter watering and subsequent proper preparation for wintering, young seedlings root better and give better growth in the first year than usual. By the way, it is believed that it is the first year after planting that is the most important in the "life" of the seedlings, and it is he who determines their development in the coming years.

How to properly water trees before winter? Watering is desirable in mid-December, it is possible a little earlier, but the result will not be the same. For irrigation, water from the tap, from a well or any other reservoir is used, the water is not heated. Water abundantly, repeating watering several times, as soon as the water is absorbed. The soil should be moistened to a depth of about 80 centimeters.

Preparing trees for wintering

After watering the soil around the trees, we mulch with manure, compost or leaves (use the leaves only if you are sure that there are no sleeping pests in them!) To retain moisture and accumulate nutrients. The thickness of the mulch layer should be no more than 10 centimeters. Before the very frosts, all the trees on the site need to be covered with earth to a height of about 30 centimeters, this will help protect the roots from frost, including in the event of subsidence of the earth.

Important! In early spring, be sure to remove all excess soil from under the trees! Now you can carry out sanitary pruning and wrap the trunks of young (and not so) trees with various suitable materials to protect against rodents. Everything, the trees are ready for wintering.

What else needs to be done?

We carry out the final general cleaning of the garden-vegetable garden-dacha, rake out all the garbage, pull out the remaining grass, faded annual flowers, take out-burn-put in a compost heap. If there are a lot of harmful insects on the site, then the leaves, twigs, rotten fruits are by no means put in a compost heap or pit. We only burn! Thus, we prevent active reproduction of pests.

We cover all perennials, which for some reason did not have time to cover earlier. Digging up the remaining untouched beds. We check the rose bushes, if necessary, we carry out the last pruning (in warm regions, by November, the roses have time to overgrow a little with extra branches), remove the growth, if any, then dig in and insulate the roses.

If you have an area of lawn grass, now is the time to do the last mowing of the lawn and mulch it with a mixture of sand, peat and garden soil, taken in equal proportions. The consumption of the mixture should be approximately 2 kg per 1 square meter. This is done in order to build up a fertile soil layer, as well as to level out irregularities that have appeared during the warm period. Closer to December, when the ground will freeze a little, but there will be no snow yet, we will return to the lawn and feed it with any mineral fertilizer. Such a late application of top dressing will allow it to persist until spring, and in the warm season it will begin to enter the soil and will create the best starting conditions for the growth of the "green carpet".
