Growing gooseberries

Gooseberry is familiar to many summer residents since childhood, since it is popular in any garden. Gardeners and gardeners value gooseberries for their usefulness, good taste, high yields and early ripening. However, in order for the shrub to develop very well and be healthy, it is necessary to know some rules regarding cultivation and care

The main aspects in terms of growing gooseberries

Gooseberry is a crop that begins to bear its first fruits only three to four years after planting on the site. One bush can delight its owner with a wonderful harvest every year for two decades. At the same time, gooseberry is a rather unpretentious crop, although some rules for care and cultivation must still be followed. Otherwise, lack of care or its improper implementation threatens with serious problems in the form of diseases and insect pests.

Every gardener must observe several factors when it comes to growing gooseberry bushes. First of all, it is required to correctly and correctly select the variety of berries, since this has a direct relationship with the development of the plant in the garden, its yield and protection from infections. Secondly, an important aspect is the choice of a place for growing gooseberries and the selection of the most favorable terms for planting a seedling in the open air.

The procedures for caring for gooseberry shrubs themselves consist of pruning, weeding and mulching the earth, regularly watering, applying fertilizers, creating protection from cold wind currents, and preparing for wintering. Almost all gardeners love to grow gooseberries on their plots, since it requires very little effort and time, but the harvest is almost always pleasing with abundance and high quality. Therefore, in many summer cottages, the cultivation of gooseberries has become a kind of custom.

How to choose a place where gooseberries will grow?

Before planting a gooseberry bush directly, you need to choose a good place to grow it in advance. The quality of the soil must meet the standards that are determined for the crop. On too wet soil, gooseberries will bear very little fruit, and they will be exposed to diseases very often. Also, avoid placing gooseberry shrubs where there are depressions or cracks, persistent moisture build-up, shade, or heavy soil with a high clay content.

How to prepare a place for planting gooseberries?

For the best process of growing gooseberries in the garden, you should take care of the proper quality of the soil. Especially for these purposes, compost, humus or manure must be added to the soil. If the soil is of the type of clayey soils, then sand should be added to it in proportions of one to two. Also, on the site selected for growing gooseberries, weeds should be destroyed and a hole should be dug, the length and width of which will be forty centimeters each. The depth here is usually about fifty centimeters. In this very hole, it is necessary to add fertilizer, consisting of a kilogram of compost and one hundred grams of wood ash, which is sometimes replaced with rotted organic components. All substances must be mixed with fertile soil and filled with four to five liters of water.

Then, in this hole, you need to place the prepared gooseberry bush seedling very carefully and at an angle. The root system must be placed deep enough into the soil to be firmly attached to it. Such a specific planting will ensure that the root system does not have voids. In other words, the shrubbery on the personal plot will get used to it quickly enough. Then the hole should be covered with soil, but a shallow furrow should be left around the trunk. In such a situation, when it is planned to plant several bushes of the culture, the distance between the plants should be from a meter to two, depending on the variety.

The best time to plant gooseberries is during the fall. In the north, gooseberries are often planted in the first autumn month, and in temperate climates, planting usually falls in early October. Thus, the rooting of the bush occurs even before the onset of the first frost, and the acclimatization itself occurs precisely in winter. And already in the spring season, the gooseberry will begin to grow.
