With proper care, the gooseberry bush can bear fruit for over twenty years. However, sometimes some varieties can please with their harvest for a much longer time. Of course, to achieve this result requires constant attention to this culture.

First of all, due attention should be paid to the choice of a place for growing gooseberries. It is on this that the final result will depend to a large extent. Gooseberries need a lighted place on the site. If the site is even slightly darkened, then the harvest will be small, and the berries themselves are not so tasty.

Also, an excess of moisture in the soil does not contribute to obtaining a proper harvest. Very often, the root collar of the bush can rot, which as a result will lead to the death of the gooseberry. Wetlands and heavy clay soils are not conducive to quality gooseberry cultivation.

The timing of planting bushes is also very important. This can be done not only in spring, but also in autumn. However, in spring, gooseberries should be planted after the soil has thawed and before the buds begin to swell. Such a period is rather difficult to find, so many summer residents prefer autumn. About a month and a half before the cold snap, bushes should be planted, then they will have time to take root in a new place.

It is very important to observe the required spacing between the bushes: otherwise the plants can not only get sick with many diseases, but also become more susceptible to pest attacks. In addition, the following fertilizers should be applied: wood ash, double superphosphate, potassium sulfide and rotted organic matter.

At the same time, it is important to remove dried roots and cut off the tops of the branches: no more than five buds can be left on the shoots.

After the shoots have been selected and planted, sufficient attention should be paid to caring for the gooseberry. Only proper care will allow you to get the desired harvest, as well as avoid many problems during cultivation. Regular digging and loosening of the soil is an integral part of gooseberry care. The depth is calculated depending on the very structure of the soil.

Timely weed removal is important not only for gooseberries, but for all crops. However, many gardeners forget about this. Weeds are often a habitat for a variety of pests that can cause significant damage to future crops.

You should also carry out regular fertilizing. Rotten manure or compost, superphosphate, saltpeter and potassium chloride are suitable for this purpose. Fertilizers are to be applied twice a year. The first time this should be done after the end of flowering, and the second time after the harvest has been harvested.

Regular monitoring of the slightest changes in the bushes will allow you to start pest control in a timely manner and prevent the development of various diseases. It is pests and diseases that can bring a lot of trouble to gardeners and completely deprive them of their harvest. Sometimes especially neglected cases contribute to the complete death of the bushes.

Don't forget about harvesting at the right time. Of course, the gooseberry ripening period directly depends on the selected variety. Gooseberries can be harvested within about one month: the berries will not crumble, even if they are ripe for a long time. As for the average, one bush usually yields a yield of six to eight kilograms.
