Cucumbers are renowned for their love of watering. And although the fruits are not even noticeable yet, special attention should be paid to this matter already now. When cucumbers lack moisture, this negatively affects its taste, the fruit becomes bitter. At the same time, if you "fill" the garden bed, under certain conditions, this, in turn, can provoke the development of diseases. But the subtlety of caring for cucumbers is that at different stages of development, the volumes of required water also differ
Watering rates for cucumbers
Cucumbers are very fond of drinking water. But in this matter, it is very important not to overdo it and observe the measure so as not to harm the vegetable. Let's remember in which stages of development they need water more, and when it is not worth it to part with watering. In particular, before your pets enter the flowering period, water them once a week. On average, one plant requires 0.5 liters of water. Well, for those who water the plantings from a watering can, you need to adopt the following rule: for 1 square meter. the area of the beds will consume approximately 4-5 liters of water. If you overdo it, the plant, to the delight of the gardener, will build up a good green mass, but the flowering will shift in time. In addition, it will lead to a decrease in the amount of the crop. The fact that the plant consumes too much moisture will be indicated by its appearance. When too dense dominance of leaves is formed, it is useful to skip the next watering, or even a couple.
From the moment when the ovaries appeared on the lashes, cucumbers can no longer be transferred to a "dry" content. Now the frequency of watering should be 2-3 times a week. The same rule applies to both the fruiting period and the harvest. The volume of water is also increased several times. On average, one plant already requires 2 liters of water.
Closer to autumn, from the second decade of August, the volume and frequency of watering should be moderated. It is enough to moisten the soil in the beds every 2 weeks, while each plant needs about 0.5 liters of water.
When the cucumbers are grown outdoors, the weather is also monitored. Some of the work for the gardener can be done by rainfall. At the same time, when the weather is cloudy and cold outside, it is better to postpone watering for a day with more favorable conditions. With such whims of nature, the roots of plants absorb moisture worse, and evaporation takes longer and water can stagnate, and cucumbers from this can rot. Another danger of high humidity when the temperature drops is the possibility of fungal disease.
Methods and rules for watering cucumbers
When the weather outside the window is good, there are no special problems with watering. But it is advisable to warm up the irrigation water in the sun before that. The optimum temperature for moistening the soil in the garden bed is + 25 … + 28 ° С. In this case, the surplus will easily evaporate, and the earth will take the right amount of moisture.
When it is required to water at the root, the first half of the day, until noon, is taken away for this. Watering is done so that the soil around the plant is moistened within a radius of about 15 cm and 20 cm deep. No water jet is directed in the immediate vicinity of the root collar. Also avoid splashing on the leaves and base of the stem. The jet itself should not be too forceful - it is important to wet the layers of the earth, and not splash water over the surface and create a soil crust.
On hot days, it may be tempting to water the leaves so that they do not faint from the high temperatures. But such a mistake will lead to burns on the leaves. Instead, it is recommended to shower on the leaves in the evening - in the interval when the heat has already receded, and the night coolness has not yet come.
When the beds with cucumbers in the garden are located not far from capital buildings, near walls and fences, then the land here will dry out a little faster. Therefore, watering will have to be done more often. And planting in a greenhouse or greenhouse beds after moistening must be ventilated.
