Syzygium malay (lat. Syzygium malaccense) - a kind of slowly growing tree creatures of the genus Syzygium (lat. Syzygium), ranked by botanists as belonging to the Myrtaceae family (lat. Myrtaceae). The tree has many virtues. It is decorative, gives edible fruits, has healing powers. The tree looks especially impressive during flowering, when its large flowers envelop the branches with their long stamens, creating small picturesque clouds.

The specific epithet "malaccense" refers to the birthplace of the spectacular tree, Malaysia. From there it migrated to India and the countries of Southeast Asia, to the tropics of East Africa, and then reached America.

The Latin name of the plant has synonyms, among which the popular is "Malay apple", emphasizing the external similarity of its fruits with apples familiar to Europeans. Or a purely Asian name - "Yambosa".

Description

The relatively short trees grow slowly, reaching a maximum of eighteen meters in height. The bark that protects the vessels of the plant is pale brown, rough. The surface of the bark is scaly, flaky, or heavily fractured.

The pyramidal crown is formed by flexible branches covered with leathery evergreen leaves, the shape of which is more elliptical than that of other species of the genus, resembling the leaves of Ficus rubbery. With a length of a sheet plate from fifteen to forty-five centimeters, the width varies from nine to twenty centimeters. Young leaves are born colored red. Over time, the glossy surface of the leaves turns into a dark green color, which becomes paler on the back of the leaf. Thin lateral veins diverge from the central, well-visible vein.

The cluster inflorescences that appear in early summer are formed by relatively large flowers, the volume of which is added by numerous bright long stamens (up to four centimeters long), forming like small clouds over the green sepals of the flower. The flowers exude a light aroma and can be painted in white, yellow, pink-purple, red. The red flowers are especially spectacular.

Three months after the beginning of flowering, edible fruits of a bell-shaped or oblong shape appear, really resembling red apple varieties in their appearance. The length of the fruit varies from five to ten centimeters with a width of three to eight centimeters. But there are also white, pink fruits, or white with pink or red stripes. Under the waxy thin skin of the fruit, there is a crunchy sweetish juicy pulp, which is more similar in structure to the pulp of a watermelon. The fruit can be seedless, or have one or two rather large brown seeds in the center.

Usage

The Malay apple is considered to be the most beautiful species among the plants of the genus "Syzygium". The combination of its wider leathery leaves with bright large flowers and red fruits has been highly appreciated by gardeners.

On the plantations where the Coffee tree is grown, instead of the scarecrow, which is placed in Russian gardens, the Malay Syzygium is planted in order to distract the attention of birds from Coffee with the bright flowers and fruits of this tree.

People eat the fruits of the tree fresh; make jam from them, adding brown sugar and ginger to the fruits; prepare a side dish for other dishes by stewing fruits with the addition of various spices; produce red and white dessert wine.

In cooking, tree flowers are also used, decorating salads with them, or boiling them in sugar syrup.
