Brugmancia aromatic (lat. Brugmancia suaveolens) - one of the most interesting representatives of the Brugmansia clan. The plant cannot boast of large flowers, but it has a rich aroma and delicate color. In nature, the species is found in warm regions, but most often in South America and India. It is often called the devil's tree. This aspect is due to the high content of psychotropic substances that negatively affect a person when grown in large quantities.

Characteristics of culture

Fragrant brugmansia is represented by highly branched plants, which reach 1.5-2 m in height. Shoots are crowned with green oval and elongated foliage, located in several tiers. The flowers are medium-sized, white or yellowish, sometimes pale pink, bell-shaped, slightly elongated, always fragrant.

Interestingly, the flowers emit an intoxicating aroma, if you inhale it for too long, headaches, insomnia, nausea and even loss of consciousness occur. For this reason, fragrant brugmansia is not recommended to be planted in large quantities in public places or stuffy rooms, but only singly.

The psychotropic effect of the plant was evaluated by pharmacologists and biochemists. Through long-term manipulation, they obtain atropine alcoids from the plant, which are used in some medicines. By the way, Indians consider brugmansia a divine gift. They use flowers for the treatment of many diseases and for conducting séances.

Crop pruning

Pruning is an integral part of aromatic brugmansia care. It is advisable to carry out the procedure in early spring, always before the formation of new shoots, otherwise the plant may die or recover for a long time. The lack of pruning will negatively affect the decorative properties: the bushes will quickly become shapeless.

First of all, in brugmansia, sick, broken and dry shoots are removed, and only then they shorten all the rest (except for lateral horizontal ones) by 1/3 part. It is very important to trim with gloves (preferably rubber gloves, no damage). They will protect the skin from irritation and burns that can be caused by toxic substances in the plant.

It is worth noting that all types of brugmansia, including fragrant ones, tolerate the pruning procedure painlessly. The main thing is not to touch the lateral horizontal branches. The fact is that flower buds are laid on them. If they are removed or shortened, the plant will not please with flowering.

Fertilization

Top dressing is also important for the growth and development of aromatic brugmansia. It is necessary to carry out at least six dressings in the spring and summer, but it is better to apply fertilizers at least once a week. Desirable alternately - mineral fertilizers (especially phosphorus and potassium), organic matter, but rotted, for example, humus. Lack of dressing promises abundant flowering or even its absence.

Winter care

Fragrant brugmansia is a tub plant. In the summer, it should be taken out into the open air in the garden, with the onset of cold weather, it should be brought into a room or a greenhouse. The optimum temperature in winter is 18C, but not lower than 10C. It is important to reduce watering, no additional feeding is required. The only thing that is required is additional lighting.
