Maksimovich's euonymus (lat. Euonymus maximowicziana) - large ornamental shrub or tree; species of the genus Euonymus of the family Euonymus. In nature, the plant can be found in deciduous and mixed forests, in thickets of bushes and on rocky slopes in Korea and the Primorsky Territory. Currently it is grown in many regions of Russia.

Characteristics of culture

Maksimovich's euonymus is a deciduous shrub or tree up to 7 m high with large green elliptical leaves. In autumn, the foliage takes on a pinkish color. The flowers are whitish-green, inconspicuous, collected in semi-umbellate inflorescences. Fruits are medium-sized carmine-red four-leafed bolls, when ripe they resemble stars. The seeds are equipped with an orange shell, hang from the fruit on thin "threads", are poisonous, their use, even in small quantities, leads to unfavorable consequences.

Maksimovich's euonymus, like other species, acquires a special decorative effect at the beginning of autumn, even after leaf fall, bright boxes adorn a very boring landscape. Often, shoots with hanging capsules and seeds are used when drawing up autumn bouquets. Maksimovich's euonymus is winter-hardy, shade-tolerant, grows very slowly at a young age. It begins to bear fruit in 10-11 years after planting. Blooms in May - June for two weeks, begins bearing fruit in late September - early October.

Features of growing in the garden

Beresklet Maksimovich prefers fertile, drained, loose, water and air permeable soils. Will not tolerate waterlogging, strongly acidic, compacted, waterlogged, heavy clay and saline soils. The location is preferably semi-shaded with diffused light, it is not forbidden to grow a crop in open sunny areas. The culture of lowlands with stagnant cold air and places where melt water accumulates in spring does not accept.

The mixture for filling the planting pits is made up of sod and leafy soil, coarse-grained washed river sand and peat, taken in a ratio of 2: 1: 1: 1. Possible option: fertile garden and greenhouse land and sand in a ratio of 3: 2: 1. It is recommended to plant the planting material in moist and pre-fertilized soil, thus accelerating the survival rate. If the soil on the site is strongly acidic, preliminary liming is carried out, and on heavy soils, drainage is arranged with a layer of 10-15 cm (crushed stone, pebbles, sand).

Care

Competent care and favorable growing conditions are the key to active growth and abundant fruiting. Care consists in feeding, watering, pruning, loosening and fighting pests and diseases. Young plants in central Russia also need shelter. Top dressing is carried out in three approaches: in the spring - with compost or humus and nitrogen fertilizers, in the middle of summer - with complex mineral fertilizers, at the end of the growing season - with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. Watering is carried out 1-2 times a month, the number of waterings is increased during severe drought.

The soil in the near-trunk zone is loosened as the soil is compacted, at the same time weeds are removed, this procedure is especially important for young plants. With good care, Maksimovich's euonymus is practically not affected by pests. Among the most dangerous are considered to be scale insects, mealybugs and apple moth. You can fight them with systemic insecticides, for example, Confidor or Aktara. At the first signs of damage, it is recommended to wash the plants with soapy water or remove insects with a damp cloth.
