Characteristics of culture
Korean barberry is a shrub up to 2 m high, equipped with simple short spines. The leaves are green, almost leathery, large, obovate. In autumn, the foliage takes on an unusually beautiful purple-red color. The flowers are bright yellow, fragrant, collected in racemose inflorescences of 15-20 pieces. Fruits are spherical, red, up to 1 cm in diameter. Korean barberry blooms in late May - early June, fruits ripen in October. He cannot boast of fast growth. It has an average winter hardiness; in cold winters, the tops of the shoots freeze under the plants. In general, Korean barberry is unpretentious, easily tolerates prolonged drought and heat.
Growing conditions
Open sun areas protected from through winds are optimal for Korean barberry. Soils are preferable neutral, moist, light, loamy, with good drainage. Strongly acidic, waterlogged and waterlogged soils are not suitable. Korean barberry does not tolerate close occurrence of groundwater. Growing crops on poor soils is not prohibited, but abundant fruiting in this case should not be expected.
Reproduction and planting subtleties
Korean barberry is easily propagated by seed and vegetative methods. Among gardeners, the most common method of propagation is green cuttings. This method is suitable for all representatives of the genus Barberry. It is not recommended to harvest unripe cuttings, they take root less well and take root for a long time. Cuttings are cut in the summer from strong healthy shoots of the current year. A well-disinfected tool should be used for cutting.
Each cutting should have at least one internode. The optimal length is 7-10 cm. The lower cut is made oblique, the upper cut is horizontal. Treatment of cuttings with growth stimulants will speed up the rooting process. Cuttings are planted in a greenhouse filled with a soil mixture consisting of sand and peat in a 3: 1 ratio. Planting scheme - 10 * 5 cm. The optimum rooting temperature is 25C. The formed seedlings are transplanted to a permanent place after 1-2 years.
You can propagate Korean barberry by dividing the bush. For the procedure, it is recommended to use bushes of five years old. The bush is dug up and divided into several parts. Each division must have a well-developed root system. Landing is carried out immediately to a permanent place.
The planting pit is prepared in advance, its depth depends on the size of the root system, and varies from 25 to 50 cm. A hill is formed at the bottom of the pit, the mixture for which is made from garden soil, humus and sand in a ratio of 1: 1: 1. After planting, the voids are thoroughly filled with the same mixture, watered abundantly and mulched. Important: on heavy soils, high-quality drainage is desirable, acidic soils are preliminarily limed.
Care
Caring for all representatives of the genus Barberry is practically the same. Watering once a week, loosening the soil in the near-stem zone to improve aeration, removing weeds, mulching with peat, fallen leaves or sawdust. Top dressing every 2-3 years using nitrogen fertilizers, slurry and fertilizers with microelements. In the fall, it is also advisable to feed the plants, this is necessary to prepare the shrubs for the upcoming cold weather.
For the winter, young barberries are covered with spruce branches, and the soil in the near-trunk zone is mulched with a layer of 20 cm. Instead of spruce branches, the use of burlap, craft paper or lutrasil is not prohibited. The Korean barberry needs annual sanitary pruning, which consists in removing dry, frozen and broken branches. Preventive treatments and pest and disease control - it is one of the most important procedures for caring for barberry, it should not be overlooked. All work on the care of the crop should be carried out with care, since the plants are equipped with thorns.
