Arnebia beautiful (lat. Arnebia pulchra) - a spectacular herbaceous perennial of the genus Arnebia (Latin Arnebia), which is part of the Borage family (Latin Boraginaceae). It grows in poor soils with good water permeability. Large yellow flowers form a picturesque inflorescence against the background of green fleshy leaves covered with light pubescence. The Latin name has many popular synonyms.

What's in your name

The Latin genus name "Arnebia" is rooted in the Arabic language. The plant was admired by the Prophet Mohammed himself, for which some call the plant "The Flower of the Prophet." But the Latin name does not encrypt the glorious deeds and speeches of the prophet, but a very earthly creature - a rabbit. After all, it is the word "rabbit" that sounds like "arneb" in Arabic, and the plant got it for the dense pubescence, which protects many species of the genus.

The specific Latin epithet “pulchra” (“beautiful”) was not assigned to the plant by chance. The softness and beauty of the leaves and bright yellow inflorescences makes the world more beautiful and elegant. Moreover, beautiful Arnebia grows on such poor soils, on which there are no other people who want to decorate the world.

Description

To extract nutrients from poor sandy or stony soils, nature has provided Arnebia with a beautiful taproot.

Erect stems rise to a height of 20 to 40 centimeters and are covered with sessile leaves. Elongated leaves can be lanceolate, elliptical or oval in shape, with a smooth edge and a sharp top. Basal leaves form a dense rosette, creating a dense cover for the surface of the earth. The stem and leaves are protected by scattered pubescence, which, depending on living conditions, can be hard, soft or silky.

The main decorative effect of the plant is given by yellow flowers that appear at the ends of the shoots during May and June. If the weather permits, then flowering can begin in April. The flowers form a dense and lush curl inflorescence. On the surface of the five petals of a flower corolla, nature has painted spots or stripes of red, brown, chocolate, lilac or purple. The spots are needed to attract pollinators. After pollination, having fulfilled their role, the spots slowly disappear.

In place of the pollinated flower, a fruit is born - a dry nut, painted in brown-green shades. The seeds of Arnebia are beautiful and large, one gram contains about 30 pieces. Not all seeds are characterized by good germination, therefore it is recommended to allocate two seeds per hole.

Growing conditions

Since in nature Arnebia grows beautifully in open areas, the plant has developed a love for good lighting. Therefore, for beautiful Arnebia, we choose a place in the garden that is oriented to the east.

Arnebia beautiful grows on poor rocky soils, which easily allow rainwater to pass through, preventing water from stagnating. The plant will not refuse to live in fertile soil that provides good drainage, since dampness is destructive for its roots. This does not exclude watering the plant at all. Arnebia beautiful should be watered abundantly, making sure that no stagnation of water is created in the soil. That is, dense clay soils were not created by the Almighty for this plant. A pH range from slightly acidic to neutral soil will suit Arnebia.

Arnebia is propagated beautifully by sowing seeds or root cuttings in early spring. A frost-resistant plant saves the grower from the hassle of growing seedlings. Sowing can be carried out directly into open ground, protecting the soil from the formation of stagnant spring moisture. Seedlings appear at an air temperature of about 15 degrees.

Many plants blooming in early spring will become beautiful neighbors for Arnebia. For example, Medunitsa, Levisia, Primrose, Snowdrops and other spring flowers.
