Siberian aquilegia (lat. Aquilegia sibirica) - flowering decorative culture; a representative of the genus Aquilegia of the numerous Buttercup family. In nature, it occurs in wet meadows, along river banks, in the mountains and deciduous and pine forests. Natural area - northern and western regions of Mongolia, western and eastern part of Siberia, as well as some countries of Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Used in culture, but not often. It is grown mainly for landscaping personal backyards and summer cottages.

Characteristics of culture

Siberian aquilegia is represented by perennial plants no more than 60 cm in height, forming in the process of growth multi-stem lush bushes, shrouded in openwork trifoliate reddish-green foliage. Small blue, lilac-blue and whitish flowers rise above the bushes, equipped with thin short spurs, which give the plants a special appeal. The flowers do not exceed 5-5.5 cm in diameter.

The flowering of Siberian aquilegia is observed in the third decade of May, sometimes later, depending on the climate of the area where the crop is cultivated. Flowering lasts approximately 3-4 weeks. The fruits ripen by the second - third decade of July, the foliage by that time acquires a yellowish color and dies off. The species in question, unlike, for example, the Olympic aquilegia, cannot boast of secondary flowering, but this does not at all affect the decorative properties of the plant.

Despite the short flowering, Siberian aquilegia is actively cultivated by amateur gardeners. The species belongs to the category of drought-resistant, frost-resistant and resistant to pests and diseases, although in unfavorable years and in the absence of proper care, the latter factor is often observed.

At present, Siberian aquilegia is represented by several varieties, among them the variety called "Adba" has won particular popularity and love. It is characterized by plants that form lush bushes with an abundance of white flowers. The species in question, by the way, is one of the most persistent, even a prolonged heat does not in any way affect its health, except that the flowers may become smaller.

The subtleties of growing

In general, aquilegia cannot be called whimsical plants, and Siberian aquilegia is no exception. However, in order to achieve the best results, namely active development and abundant flowering, it is advisable to observe certain conditions. So, the crop should be planted in areas with light, loose, nutritious and moderately moist soils. The introduction of rotted organic matter and mineral fertilizers is encouraged. They activate the growth of still immature plants and accelerate the process of survival of seedlings or cuttings.

The soil for the cultivation of the culture is prepared in advance, it is dug up to a depth of 20-25 cm and thoroughly loosened without leaving lumps. Seedlings are planted in the first decade of June, keeping the distance between plants equal to 20-30 cm, which depends on the compactness of the bush. It is recommended to plant tall varieties at a distance of 30 cm, undersized varieties are content with a smaller gap.

It is important to remember that Siberian aquilegia, like other representatives of the genus, is abundantly self-sown, and specimens that appear in spring should be removed immediately, otherwise they will fill the flower garden or the allotted area, turning it into a dense green mass that will not please with beautiful flowering. In addition, thickened plantings threaten to be affected by diseases and pests.

Another point that should be taken into account when growing Siberian aquilegia is that plants can grow in one place up to 4-6 years, after which they need division. By this time, the bushes are bare and disintegrate in different directions, losing their decorative effect. Actually, old bushes cannot boast of a rich and abundant flowering. There are no peculiarities in caring for the crop; timely weeding, watering and feeding is enough for it.
