Description

The small-branched taproot of sage can go two meters deep in the soil in search of water and food. Erect pubescent tetrahedral stem stretches towards the light, reaching a height of 40 to 120 centimeters.
Leaves of the first year of life, as a rule, are represented only by a basal rosette. In the future, the stem is covered with large ovate wrinkled leaves, pubescent and having petioles at the bottom of the stem. Closer to the top, they lose their petioles, turn into sessile leaves and become smaller.
Spike-shaped long branches of inflorescences are covered with large white, light blue or pinkish-purple bisexual flowers.
Sage seeds are round, small, dark brown in color.
Growing
The unpretentiousness of clary sage to soils when it grows in the wild on sandy places, clings to rocky slopes of gorges and hills, gives way to a preference for more fertile soils when it comes to growing strong cultivated plants. Soils must be well drained and contain lime.
Sage loves sunny places, easily tolerates drought.
The plant is propagated by seeds (self-seeding is possible). When sown in the fall, the seeds are immediately determined in open ground. In spring, it is possible to sow in boxes for growing seedlings, which are planted in a permanent place at the beginning of June. With spring sowing, sage will please with flowering only the next year.
Faded plants are removed to maintain the decorative effect of the flower garden.
Use in the garden
A very beautiful flowering pleases a little over a month. Then the plant dies off, losing its decorative effect.
