Cardiocrinum (lat. Cardiocrinum) - a flowering perennial, which is a representative of the Liliaceae family. It is considered the highest among all plants belonging to the Liliaceae family. And its name, which has a Greek origin, is translated literally as "heart-shaped lily".

Description

Cardiocrinum is a tall bulbous plant - the height of its peduncles, generously covered with flowers resembling lilies (and there can be up to eighty flowers on one peduncle!), Often ranges from one and a half to three meters. Large shiny leaves of this plant are characterized by a heart-shaped shape and are located on fairly strong petioles. One stem can contain up to thirty leaves, while they are located mainly in the upper parts of the stems. And the diameter of the bulbs of this giant handsome man can vary from five to twenty centimeters.

The length of the tubular horizontally deflected greenish-white fragrant flowers of the cardiocrinum often reaches fifteen centimeters. And the tops of the tepals are covered with small purple specks. The flowers of the cardiocrinum are characterized by a fairly strong aroma, which will only intensify with the onset of the evening.

In total, the genus of cardiocrinum includes three independent species.

Where grows

Most often, cardiocrinum can be found in East Asia - there this huge plant feels very comfortable in rare forests and forest edges. Especially often it can be seen in the Kuriles, Sakhalin, as well as in China, Japan or in the Himalayas.

Usage

Cardiocrinum is excellent for use in decorative floriculture and landscape design. And the best companions for this majestic handsome man will be low-growing creepers loyal to shading: a hoof, a zelenchuk, a tenacious, a loosestrife, etc. or they stand in dense and low grass in meadows or on the edges!

Growing and caring

Slightly shaded areas with deep, rich, loose, well-drained and moist soils are best suited for planting cardiocrinum. This plant will feel especially good under the canopy of a wide variety of broad-leaved species. But too sunny places will not be the best option - under the direct rays of the heavenly body, the leaves of a beautiful plant can easily get serious burns. And it is also desirable to protect this handsome man from the strong wind.

Since the winter hardiness of cardiocrinum is rather weak, and he is used to wintering along with leaf rosettes, for the winter he needs a cover with spruce branches or a good air-dry shelter. At the same time, this plant overwinters great under snow covers, but if the winter is cold and snowless, it can easily freeze out.

Cardiocrinum propagates mainly by seeds or bulbs - freshly harvested sowing material is usually sown before winter, while the first flowering of seedlings occurs only in the seventh to tenth year of the plant's life. Fading mother plants gradually die, however, after them, onion babies remain - they all bloom in the second or third year. Such bulbs are planted to a depth of three to five centimeters, after which they must be covered with a very impressive layer of fallen leaves.
