Darmer it is also sometimes called peltiphyllum. This plant is perennial, and is of particular value due to its amazingly beautiful flowers and decorative leaves. There is only one plant in the genus, which is called thyroid peltiphyllum.
Description of darmer
The flowering of Darmera or Peltiphyllum occurs at the very beginning of early spring, such flowering will begin around the end of April-beginning of May. It is noteworthy that Darmera flowers appear before its leaves. The flowering itself will last about two to three weeks. However, the flowering of Darmer is not always possible, because very often the flowers of this plant can be damaged due to spring frosts. Darmer flowers are painted in delicate pink tones, they will be quite small in size, and in diameter they will not exceed only one millimeter. The flowers are collected in rather large inflorescences, which are called scutes. In height, this plant can reach about fifty to one hundred centimeters, subject to all the necessary growing standards, the diameter of a lush bush can be fifty centimeters. In the autumn period of time, a gradual transition of leaves from green to crimson color begins. The peak of decorativeness of this plant occurs several years after its planting.
Features of care and cultivation of darmers
Darmera is considered a fairly shade-tolerant plant. For this reason, the plant is able to thrive well in partial shade conditions. It is noteworthy that in this case, Darmera can also grow in open sunny areas, but in this case the leaves will be rather pale, and the plant will have to be constantly and abundantly watered. As for soils, Darmera prefers loose, well-drained soils, which should be quite fertile, and their reaction can be either neutral or slightly acidic.
Darmere should provide moderate watering, which, however, should be regular. The plant loves moisture, but does not tolerate moisture stagnation. For this reason, good drainage should be provided for the plant. In order for moisture to be retained around the plant, the soil should be mulched with peat.
In the spring, it is recommended to apply mineral fertilizers, which will also contain nitrogen. As for organic fertilizers, namely compost and humus, they should be applied even during planting. It is permissible to apply such fertilizers in spring and autumn, this time they should act as mulch.
In late autumn, it is recommended to trim the aerial part of the darmer to the very root. It is noteworthy that the plant is able to spend the winter without shelter, however, in those regions where winters are very severe, the darmera can freeze out. For this reason, in such regions, for prevention purposes, soil mulching is practiced with humus or compost for the winter period.
Reproduction darmer
Darmera reproduces by means of rhizome cuttings. In adult plants, the division of the rhizome must be carried out in the spring period of time even before the appearance of the leaves. The rhizome must be very carefully cut into pieces, and it is recommended to sprinkle the cuts themselves with crushed charcoal. There should be about two to three renewal buds on each segment. It is noteworthy that the segments should be immediately planted in their permanent place. The segments should be located fairly close to the surface of the earth. After that, you will need to water the new plantings abundantly, mulch with compost or peat. Even before planting, it is necessary to lay a layer of organic fertilizers and drainage on the bottom of the hole. With this variant of Darmer reproduction, the flowering of new plants will begin a year or two after planting.
