Many of us consider onion husks to be the most common waste and completely ruthlessly send them to the trash can. But in fact, onion peels are a valuable raw material for solving a wide variety of problems! It makes a good fertilizer, and it can help cope with some diseases and gluttonous pests! And onion peel is also an excellent dye, as well as a valuable assistant for health promotion and in cosmetology
Fertilizer
The husk remaining from the onion is excellent for composting - it is used in this case along with any other waste: both food and vegetable. Do not rush to throw away the husk remaining after the preparation of infusions or decoctions - it will also fit for adding to the compost! And if during the winter it was possible to accumulate a sufficiently large amount of onion peel, you can also add it to the soil when digging (some experienced summer residents advise mixing chopped onion peel with a small amount of ash and adding it to the soil in this form).
It is quite permissible to use such raw materials for plant feeding - in this case, decoctions or infusions are prepared on its basis, but in concentrations slightly weaker than for spraying against pests. Tomatoes with carrots respond especially well to such feeding!
Diseases and pests
When planting potatoes, many summer residents actively use onion peels - they are usually added to the holes in order to protect the future harvest from wireworm invasions. It is no less actively used when planting tomato seedlings - it is believed that in this case it will become an excellent prophylactic agent against a number of various ailments.
And infusions or decoctions prepared on the basis of onion peels are sprayed with a wide variety of crops - such infusions and decoctions perform a double function: they help fight pests and prevent dangerous diseases. Especially well, the infusion of onion peels helps in the prevention of cucumber rot, however, in order for this prevention to be as reliable as possible, it is recommended to process cucumbers regularly throughout the season.
Natural dye
Many hostesses are well aware of this property - very many of them paint eggs in a decoction of onion peels for Easter. But not everyone knows that with the help of onion skins you can also give a pleasant golden hue to broths - in order to do this, it is quite enough just to put the onion in the broth right in the husk during cooking! If you don't want to do this, you can simply prepare a decoction of onion peels separately, adding it to the broth a little later.
By the way, once a strong decoction of onion husks was also used for dyeing natural fabrics. But the color in this case turned out to be not particularly persistent (they tried to fix it with vinegar and the most thorough heat treatment in the form of ironing with a hot iron), and in order for the fabric to stain evenly, certain skills were needed.
Medicine
Onion peel is very widely used in folk medicine: it is used to treat various diseases of the lungs or bronchi, prostatitis, female infertility and amenorrhea, periodontal disease, atherosclerosis, as well as some skin and a number of other diseases. At the same time, it can be used in a wide variety of dosage forms: in the form of oils, ointments, alcoholic tinctures, as well as decoctions or infusions that have already become traditional.
Cosmetology
Onion peel is also useful in home cosmetology - it is an excellent remedy for both skin and hair. To take care of the skin, onion peel-based ointments are usually prepared, and in order to strengthen the hair and stimulate its growth, you can use both ointments and infusions or decoctions. By the way, some women also use a decoction of onion peels to paint gray hair!
As you can see, the scope of application of onion peel is quite extensive, which means that you should not rush to throw it away - it will come in handy for something anyway!
