Description
The original name durian comes from the Malay word duri, which means a thorn in translation. The homeland of a plant from the Malvaceae family is Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines. Durian is also cultivated in other Asian countries, preferring a humid-tropical climate. It is believed that the most delicious durians are grown on the plantations of Bangkok.
Durian fruits grow on large, evergreen, branching trees, reaching a height of 15-40 meters. Leaves are simple, shiny, leathery, alternate, slightly pointed. Each sheet has a smooth surface on top, the underside is dotted with fleecy scales.
An amazing plant blooms for a short period of time. Its bright white or golden brown flowers in the form of compressed half-umbels are formed on the trunk and branches. The shape of the flowers is like a bell that blooms at dusk, and after eight hours the petals fall off. The flowers are large, pollinated by bees and bats. When blooming, a heavy sour smell spreads around the tree.
Durian fruits ripen by early spring. Fruiting occurs before the end of summer. The unusual fruit is covered with a hard skin with powerful pyramidal spines, its weight reaches 2-6 kg, up to 30 cm in length, up to 20 cm in diameter. Fruits are never picked, but wait until they fall by themselves. The fruit consists of chambers, inside which there is a yellowish-white and very delicate mass, along the edge of the valves there are yellow seeds. The taste of the fruit is ambiguous, reminiscent of a combination of banana, pineapple, overripe papaya and vanilla. Others say that durian has a nutty-cheesy flavor, with a touch of banana, onion and a variety of spices.
Eating
Ripe durian has a sweet taste and a nasty smell comes from the thick rind. The fruit is loaded with carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fiber, B vitamins, vitamin C and folic acid. Durian acts as a source of antioxidants.
The specific smell is due to the presence of organic sulfur in the peel. Locals, where durian grows, appreciate it for its excellent taste and medicinal qualities. But they buy it quite rarely and mainly for children, since the price for the fruit "bites". Fresh durian is eaten with a spoon and washed down with salted water. It has a high calorie content, so eating one “slice” will fill you up for the whole day. There is one more rule for the use of durian - this fruit is not compatible with alcohol, otherwise an upset stomach occurs.
Durian is not only consumed as food. Dried durian bark is used to smoke fish. The wood of the plant is used to build village houses. Decoctions of durian leaves in the form of a bath are useful for spilling bile, drink at elevated temperatures, the fruit pulp is a good anthelmintic. The use of durian fruits in food is indicated for cardiovascular diseases.
