Harvesting radish
The radish is harvested annually from the end of May until November. The harvest of early ripening varieties of summer radish is usually harvested towards the end of May. This is a radish grown by seedlings in film greenhouses.
The early radish, which has reached three to four centimeters in diameter, is always harvested in the summer, in about three or four passes. The soil from the roots during harvesting should be shaken off, the small roots should be removed, and the juicy tops should be cut with a knife at the same level with the radish heads, while, if possible, trying not to touch the roots themselves.
And in the fall, autumn and winter roots are harvested. By the way, they try to harvest the winter radish as late as possible, so that it has time to mature well - this little trick significantly increases its keeping quality. Nevertheless, you should not too hesitate with harvesting either - if it freezes even slightly, the harvested crop will begin to rot. Ideally, winter radish is harvested in late autumn, at the very end of October or even at the beginning of November. It is important to have time to meet the harvest before the first frost is established.
During harvesting, it is necessary to carefully reject too small, as well as overgrown and diseased root crops. Also, the tops of all root crops are cut off - this will help them not to lose moisture.
Summer radish
In indoor conditions, a young summer radish can be stored for six to seven days. It is allowed to store it in the refrigerator. Carefully sorted root vegetables are placed either in small boxes or in polyethylene bags, in which a couple of holes are previously made, and sent to the refrigerator. In such conditions, the radish is able to persist for twenty days. The relative humidity should be between 94 - 96%, and the temperature should be one to two degrees. In general, summer varieties are not adapted for long-term storage.
Autumn radish
Fall root vegetables last much longer, especially if stored at a temperature of one to three degrees in the refrigerator or in the basement. And for better storage, it will be nice to sprinkle them with sand.
Winter radish
Winter varieties of delicious and healthy radish are suitable for the longest storage. Valuable root vegetables selected for storage in refrigerators are best placed in them immediately after harvesting. At the same time, the temperature in refrigerators should not fall below zero degrees.
If you plan to store the radish in a different way, then before sending it for storage, it should be left in temporary piles covered with a soil layer. The thickness of the soil layer should be between fifteen and twenty centimeters. And only after that a strong and healthy radish is safely stored without damage.
The harvested winter radish tolerates long-term storage perfectly - it is easily stored for up to two hundred - two hundred and twenty days. Such varieties as Winter round white and Winter round black are especially well kept.
In the cellar, the harvest of radish is usually stored in moist sand. In this case, the relative humidity should be from eighty to eighty-five percent, and the temperature should be from two to three degrees. By the way, in basements and cellars, these nutritious root crops are often stored simultaneously with potatoes and carrots.
In the absence of cellars with basements, the radish can be stored in solid film bags placed in places that are not prone to freezing. Suitable for storage and well-compacted on top of the earthen pits with a manhole. And radish is also perfectly preserved in trenches and in specially equipped piles - either in boxes or right in the ground. Only in this case, it is important to take care of a reliable shelter and excellent ventilation.
