Many have heard about the benefits of goji berries, because their popularity is inexorably gaining momentum. Moreover, some summer residents began to try to grow this miraculous culture on their own plots. Why not? These shrubs are so unpretentious that there are no difficulties or troubles when growing them, and caring for them is also very easy
What does a goji bush look like?
Goji is a branchy shrub from the Solanaceae family, endowed with sharp spines and growing up to three meters in height. It looks especially impressive during the flowering period. And its fruits look like small and very pretty reddish berries, somewhat similar to the raisins we know very well.
It is noteworthy that these bushes are capable of pollinating only if there are at least two of them on the site, because goji is a crop characterized by cross-pollination.
What is the use of wondrous berries?
Since time immemorial, goji berries have been used in traditional oriental medicine - it has been established that people used them to maintain their health three thousand years ago. And this is no accident, because these marvelous berries boast a truly unique composition and the ability to bring tremendous health benefits. They include a wide range of vitamins, about two dozen of the most valuable amino acids, a huge amount of antioxidants and more than twenty essential macro- and microelements. With the help of such berries, you can significantly improve the digestive tract, normalize blood pressure, get rid of depression, strengthen the immune system and even rejuvenate the body!
The taste of goji berries is not at all repulsive, and they can always be eaten straight from the bush. Often these berries are dried or frozen, and excellent tea and a wide variety of decoctions are also prepared from them. Doctors have found that their systematic use helps protect the liver, improve brain activity and lower cholesterol.
And in eastern countries, these berries are revered as an elixir of youth and longevity. But the very widespread opinion that goji berries greatly contribute to weight loss, many doctors dispute, assuring that these Tibetan berries have a very mediocre relationship to weight loss. However, this is not so important, because they have many other useful properties!
How to grow goji berries in the country?
Goji are shrubs that multiply very easily and quickly. They can be planted both with the help of the apical shoots, and with the help of seeds or seedlings. In the case of choosing the option with seeds, it is important to take into account that well-moistened soil and surface sowing are used for their germination. By the way, such seeds sprout quickly enough - after a week!
It is best to plant goji shrubs in sunny areas, reliably protected from gusts of strong winds. As for the soils, this culture is absolutely not demanding for them, however, the most optimal option for it will still be soils that are not characterized by stagnant moisture. Despite the fact that these shrubs boast impressive drought resistance, in hot weather, accompanied by a complete lack of rain, they need to be watered from time to time (at least once a week). And this culture is also rarely fertilized.
If you want to get larger berries, then the shrubs should be trimmed periodically, not allowing them to stretch up excessively. It is also important to ensure that their crowns do not thicken too much. In addition, from time to time it is necessary to loosen the soil around their trunks.
As you can see, there is nothing difficult in growing goji berries in summer cottages - this culture is very unpretentious, but at the same time it willingly pleases its happy owners with a huge number of bright and healthy berries. So you definitely won't have to regret the time spent!
