Spotted phlox (Phlox maculata) - flower culture; a representative of the Phlox genus of the Smnyukhov family. In nature, it grows along river banks, meadows, as well as in wet areas in small forests. The eastern region of the United States is considered homeland, it is also called meadow phlox. A highly decorative species, according to its external features, it resembles the paniculata phlox (Latin Phlox paniculata), but it is distinguished as a separate species. Until now, breeders are working to create new cultivars. Today, a small number of varieties are presented on the Russian market.
Characteristics of culture
Spotted phlox is a perennial herb up to 100 cm high with strong, erect, numerous stems covered with small strokes and specks of purple color. The foliage is rather small, narrowish, oval-lanceolate, shiny, dense, opposite. The flowers are attractive, fragrant, light purple or purple, up to 2.5-3 cm in diameter, collected in narrow cylindrical inflorescences. Flowering occurs in June - July, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
Currently, there are varieties of spotted phlox with stems that do not have specks on the market. There are also varieties with white and pink flowers. The species in question is actively used in ornamental gardening. It is ideal for creating mixborders, flower beds, mixed compositions, as well as decorating shady areas and coastal areas. Spotted phlox is distinguished by winter hardiness, resistance to pests and diseases. Moisture-loving view, does not accept dry sites. Also makes special demands on the soil. It should be loamy, light, loose, permeable, slightly acidic, non-saline.
Varieties
Paniculata phlox, as already mentioned, is represented by a small number of varieties, but breeders are still working to expand the range. Moreover, the species in question is actively used in the hybridization of recently appeared cultural phloxes. So, in Russia the following varieties are most popular:
* Natasha is a universal variety; represented by plants that form bushes up to 70 cm high with white flowers, equipped with a small crimson strip in the middle of the petal, and collected in dense cylindrical inflorescences. Suitable for decorating various types of flower beds. The variety was named after the curator of perennial plants in the Botanical Garden - Natalia Lunina.
* Schneelawine (Shneelavin) - a universal variety; represented by plants more than 50 cm in height with strong and rapidly growing stems and small snow-white flowers, collected in loose, cylindrical, rather large inflorescences. The variety is early, has high winter-hardy properties.
* Rosalinde (Rosalinda) - one of the tallest varieties; represented by large plants up to 130 cm in height with strong numerous stems and pink-lilac or pink flowers, collected in dense inflorescences. Breeders note that the Rosalind variety is somewhat inferior to varieties with white flowers, but is ideal in the background of mixborders and other landscape compositions.
Breeding features
Most often, spotted phlox is propagated by vegetative methods, namely by dividing the bush and cutting the stems. The division of the bush is carried out in early spring, this procedure is also possible in summer and autumn, but the divisions obtained during these periods are very difficult to take root in a new place. Part of the bush is separated with part of the rhizome and stem, as well as its rudiments. Division is carried out with a shovel or manually. Planting material is planted immediately after dividing in a previously prepared and fertilized hole and watered abundantly.
Cuttings are carried out in the third decade of May - the second decade of July. To obtain cuttings, the entire stem is used if the cuttings are cut in the spring, or its upper part if the procedure is carried out in the summer. Cuttings are cut with two or three internodes, while the upper cut is made 1 cm above the upper node, and the lower one under the second node. The lower leaves of the cuttings are removed, the upper ones are shortened exactly by half. For rooting, cuttings are planted in a greenhouse. The planting scheme is 6 * 9 cm. The mixture for planting cuttings is made up of sand, compost and peat in a ratio of 1: 1: 1. Cuttings without treatment are immersed in the prepared mixture to a depth of about 1, 3-1, 5 cm. It is important to regularly ventilate the cuttings and water.
