To give the flower garden a harmonious finished look, they resort to using a border. The border in the flower garden is like the last dot above the "i". It is arranged from one or more strips of flowers bordering the body of the flower garden. Without these stripes, the flower garden seems naked and seeks to take up much more space than the gardener gave it. There are several things to consider when decorating a flower garden or path in the garden with a flower border
Selection of plants for the border
Most often, low-growing or creeping plants with compact and dense bushes are chosen for borders.
In order for the border plant to create an elegant and bright edging for the entire planned flower arrangement, the color of its leaves and flowers must differ from the main tone of the flower bed.
Medium-sized annuals and perennials are suitable for bordering paths in the garden.
The following plants are suitable for the arrangement of the border:
• Pansies, arabis, annual aster, ageratum, alissum, aubrieta (obrieta).
• Marigolds, tuberous begonia, crocus.
• Verbena, hyacinth, ornamental cabbage, spring crocus.
• Daisy, muscari.
• Nasturtium, undersized hazel grouse, low salvia varieties.
• Pelargonium dwarf, petunia, primrose, snowdrop, blueberry, pushkinia.
• Violet vitrocca, subulate phlox, chionodoxa, cineraria, edelweiss.
Alissum
A perennial herb or shrub blooms from June to autumn frosts on any soil. Prefers sunny places, but withstands partial shade. Its almost recumbent stems are covered with narrow leaves. Dense clusters of white or purple flowers cover the plant, exuding a honey scent far away. Secondary flowering can be ensured in one season by pruning the bushes by 5-8 centimeters during the ripening period.
Ageratum
Fluffy, fragrant balls of perennial inflorescences, grown in our gardens as an annual, decorate the garden path or border the flower bed from June to autumn frosts. Its compact bushes seem to have been created by nature for these purposes. The height of the bushes from 15 to 60 centimeters allows the plant to be used on different flower garden plans. Its sky-blue flowers are photophilous, and the whole plant loves warmth and easily tolerates drought. The latter quality is good for gardeners who visit their property periodically. To extend the flowering period, it is recommended to remove faded flowers.
Marigold
Not a single garden plot can do without unpretentious and elegant marigolds. Their graceful foliage, abundant bright flowering, delicate aroma will decorate any flower garden. Blooming two months after sowing, they delight with non-double and double flower baskets until autumn frosts.
Dwarf and medium-sized varieties are suitable for the borders of garden paths, they will create an openwork and bright border for any flower garden or vegetable garden, at the same time protecting cultivated plants from annoying pests. Marigolds prefer sunny locations, but will grow in partial shade.
Cineraria
Strongly dissected openwork leaves are covered with white hairs, giving the plant a silvery appearance. Today, cineraria is in great demand when decorating flower beds in city alleys, parks and gardens. You can also find it in summer cottages.
The flowers of the perennial plant, which we grow as an annual, are inconspicuous, but they value cineraria not for flowers, but for surprisingly noble silvery leaves.
Unpretentious and drought-resistant cineraria loves sunny places, preferring loose fertile soils with good drainage, non-acidic. In April-May, seeds are sown, growing seedlings, which are relocated to open ground, when the plants are no longer threatened by late frosts.
