Marsilia four-leafed is a species of aquatic fern and lives in wetlands and swamps in Asia, as well as in North American and European territories. This green beauty also takes root well in aquariums, where it is placed in the foreground. Nevertheless, it is extremely rare for aquarists to find magnificent four-leafed Marsilia, since it is characterized by a rather slow growth
Getting to know the plant
Quirky individual shoots extend from the creeping rhizomes of the amazing Marsilia four-leafed. At the tops of each of them there is one single dark green leaf, divided into four parts. The diameter of such leaves usually reaches five centimeters, and the total height of an amazing plant is no more than ten to twelve centimeters. By the way, the leaves of this water beauty are somewhat reminiscent of clover leaves.
Sporocarps in Marsilia four-leafed reach a length of about five millimeters and have an elliptical shape. As a rule, they are colored in dark brown tones and sit on stalks attached to the bases of the petioles, the length of which is about two centimeters.
How to grow
An aquarium for a luxurious four-leafed Marsilia is suitable for both tropical and moderately warm. And the temperature for its comfortable development must be maintained in the range from eighteen to twenty-four degrees. If the thermometer begins to show a value of less than sixteen degrees, the growth of the amazing aquatic inhabitant will stop.
As for water, its reaction can be slightly acidic or neutral. But a slightly alkaline reaction in combination with water of moderate hardness contributes to a significant slowdown in the growth of the extraordinary four-leafed Marsilia. But the change of water does not affect its development in any way.
The soil for planting this green pet needs well silted and nutritious, and the thickness of its layer should be about two to three centimeters, no more. Usually, natural silt is enough for an amazing water beauty, so there is no need for systematic feeding. And as a substrate, it is better to prefer coarse river sand - a very delicate and weak root system of a sensitive green pet will definitely appreciate it.
Moderate lighting is suitable for a wonderful water beauty. Artificial light of the wonderful four-leafed Marsilia can be provided by both fluorescent lamps (the power of which ranges from 0.3 to 0.5 W / l) and incandescent lamps. Diffused natural light will also bring a lot of benefits to a wonderful plant. In the event that the aquarium is located near the window, it is advisable to plant this aquatic beauty at the wall of the vessel turned directly towards the light. And if the aquarium is quite tall and lacks natural light, or if there is no such light at all, high-quality side lighting will not interfere. By the way, the magnificent four-leafed Marsilia can tolerate long-term shading quite tolerably. And its daylight hours should always be equal to twelve hours.
Reproduction of an amazing aquatic inhabitant occurs by cuttings of its creeping rhizomes, which are divided into several parts, each of which is equipped with five to six leaves. The most suitable for reproduction are the end parts of the rhizomes, on which the points of growth are clearly expressed. The fact is that cuttings taken from the middle of the rhizomes usually start growing extremely slowly. In addition, they die quite often.
If you grow Marsilia four-leafed in aquariums, the water level in which drops below the ten centimeters mark, then under very satisfactory lighting it can form funny surface leaves.
It is allowed to grow Marsilia four-leafed in humid greenhouse conditions. By the way, in them it is characterized by very rapid growth, and larger leaves grow on its long cuttings. And later it can be moved to aquariums, where it will perfectly take root as an underwater plant.
