Erantis (lat. Eranthis) - a very beautiful shade-tolerant perennial from the Buttercup family. The second name is a spring.
Description
Erantis is a fairly miniature perennial, equipped with fancy spherical tubers and well-developed rhizomes. Its leaves are basal, usually finger-dissected or finger-divided, and they all sit on rather long petioles. And the lobes of these leaves are equipped with strongly serrated edges and have a distinctly ovoid shape.
Single apical flowers of erantis, located at the very tips of the shoots, can be either yellow or white, and the flowering of this plant usually starts in early spring. Erantis retires, as a rule, with the onset of June. Corollas of erantis are formed by yellow or white petals in the amount of five to eight pieces, and its yellowish calyces, which disappear during the period of fruit ripening, have five to eight lobes. As for the filamentous stamens, this beautiful plant usually has thirty to thirty-six of them, and the number of pistils can vary from three to eleven, and each pistil is equipped with a single ovary, which includes from six to nine ovules.
The fruits of erantis look like accrete flattened leaflets containing a huge amount of olive-brown seeds of an oblong-ovoid shape.
All parts of erantis are poisonous - this should never be forgotten!
Where grows
The homeland of Erantis is considered to be the mountain slopes and light forests of Afghanistan, Northern Iraq, Asia Minor, China, Korea, Japan and the Far East. Now this plant can most often be found in Asia or Southern Europe. In addition, erantis is sometimes found in the wild and in the North American expanses.
Usage
Erantis is grown mainly as an ornamental plant and is excellent for planting in rockeries or rock gardens. In addition, it will be a great decoration for any lawn and will look very cool in the near-trunk circles of all kinds of conifers or various trees.
Growing and caring
It is best to plant erantis on a small hill, reliably protected from the wind and semi-shaded areas. This beautiful plant will feel especially good between stones in rockeries or under the canopy of all kinds of shrubs and trees. Despite the fact that erantis is very unpretentious, it is still better to try to plant it on moist, loose, light, ideally alkaline and fairly rich soil. In terms of air temperature, this plant boasts impressive resistance to both high enough and rather low temperatures.
Erantis should be watered abundantly, in general, this beautiful plant does not require particularly sophisticated care - it is quite enough to provide it with timely loosening, feeding and weeding.
Reproduction of a spring plant is usually carried out by dividing the nodules, each of which is divided into two or three independent parts, after which the resulting parts are thoroughly washed in a solution of potassium permanganate and, after drying them for a day, are immediately planted. It is quite acceptable to propagate this plant with freshly harvested seeds (ideally they are subjected to preliminary stratification), but if you sow them in spring, they will germinate only after a year, and the first flowering of erantis planted in this way can be enjoyed only after three to five years.
Erantis is more than resistant to pests and various ailments, but occasionally it can still be attacked by gray root mold.
